Instead, senior Tyler Armstrong -- an all-CCAA basketball player for the Tigers -- scored four touchdowns Friday against the Chiefs for Sweet Springs, which won an I-70 Conference home contest, 42-6.
On the Greyhounds' first play from scrimmage, Armstrong broke off a 75-yard run, but two of his scores would come on defense -- including a 45-yard interception return, 83 seconds after junior David Hall's 43-yard touchdown run, for a 22-0 second-quarter lead.
Santa Fe got on the board with 34 seconds left in the half when junior Ross Tieman found junior Corey Fitzwater on a 24-yard pass, but that was answered in two plays. Armstrong ran for 24 yards and Hall went on a 41-yard dash to cross the goal line with four seconds remaining in the half.
Armstrong added a 38-yard run and 90-yard interception return during the third quarter to cap the scoring for Sweet Springs.
Tieman threw for 151 yards to pace the Chiefs (1-4, 0-2 I-70), who play Friday at Windsor.
Armstrong gained 156 yards on the ground and Hall had 123 rushing yards for the 'Hounds (2-3, 2-3), who didn't attempt a pass. Sweet Springs will be at home Friday against winless Crest Ridge.
Concordia 45, Slater 0
SLATER -- A year after Concordia and Slater combined for 92 points, the Orioles won again -- this time with a shutout.
Concordia scored all of its points during the first half Friday for a 45-0 non-conference road win over the Purple.
Despite sitting after the break, sophomore Collin Werths ran for 99 yards on five carries, including a 53-yard touchdown run with barely a minute gone in the game.
Senior Brandon Dunn went in from 5 yards out later in the quarter and sophomore Cale Brunkhorst began the second period by hauling in a 38-yard touchdown pass from junior Kent Schuette.
The Orioles scored three times during the final 5:08 of the half: Dunn on a 4-yard run, junior Zach Wolski scampering in from 22 yards out and senior lineman J.R. Langkrahr returning an interception 22 yards.
Concordia (4-1) amassed 338 rushing yards and allowed the Wildcats only 105 yards in total offense.
Senior Cody Skinner had 100 all-purpose yards -- running, throwing and receiving -- for Slater.
The 'Cats (2-3) return to Lewis and Clark Conference play Friday at seventh-ranked Marceline.
