County government contends with sagging tax revenues

Tuesday, September 22, 2009
At their meeting Tuesday morning, Sept. 22, Saline County Commissioners reported on the economic impacts of low county revenues.

"We are asking that each office be very conservative on spending," Presiding Commissioner Becky Plattner said. She continued, "We are taking measures to move forward and be able to work with the ever-constant concern with lack of sales tax" revenue.

Commissioners have yet to approve budget modifications recommended by County Auditor Tara Vogelsmeier in August.

Plattner also mentioned the Santa Fe Trail Symposium, which will be held in Arrow Rock this weekend. Commissioners plan to attend part of the beginning festivities on Thursday.

"We'd like to certainly welcome and congratulate Arrow Rock for hosting this," she said.

In other business, Plattner said Missouri Valley Community Action Agency has received a grant of almost $68,000 for homeless preparedness.

About $57,000 of that sum will actually go to help the people of Saline County, Plattner said, and other funds will be used to offset relocation costs.

Commissioners will attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Community Cancer Center at Fitzgibbon Hospital Tuesday evening at 5:30.

Then, they are scheduled to meet with the Courthouse Preservation Committee at 6 p.m. in the prosecuting attorney's office.

The commission's next regularly scheduled meeting is Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 9 a.m. in the lower level of the courthouse.
