Marshall council approves 2009-2010 budget

Monday, September 21, 2009
The Marshall City Council approved the city's budget for the 2009-2010 fiscal year at its meeting Monday evening, Sept. 21.

The city expects revenues of $9,360,834 and expenditures of $9,328,826, which leaves a surplus of $32,008.

This is a much tighter margin than the 2008-2009 budget, which allowed a surplus of more than $200,000.

Capital outlays for the fiscal year 2009-2010 total $229,100, with the largest amount -- $119,000 -- going to the sanitation department for new equipment.

In her report, Mayor Connie Latimer said a preconstruction meeting for the East Eastwood Project was held last week. Work on the project is scheduled to begin Monday, Oct. 5, with the destruction of the current bridges.

The entire project should take about nine months, Latimer said.

"Hopefully we'll have good weather this winter" during the construction, she said.

In other business, council members approved routine ordinances authorizing contracts with Marshall Philharmonic Orchestra and Marshall Community Chorus for $4,000 each. The council also approved an annual resolution to provide $25,000 to Marshall-Saline Development Corporation for economic development purposes.

All council members were present at the meeting.

The council is scheduled to meet again Monday, Sept. 28, at 5:15 p.m. to pay the final bills of the fiscal year, Latimer said.
