Visitors to Marshall Public Library's Family Fun Night got a double dose of patriotic-themed story time Thursday evening, Sept. 17.

First, Librarian Amy Crump read the book "John, Paul, George and Ben," which tells of the childhoods of Revolutionary War figures John Hancock, Paul Revere, George Washington, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.

Elaine Osborn and Betty Stone from the Marshall chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution were also present to talk about another aspect of American history, the Constitution, because Sept. 17 is that document's 222nd "birthday."

Osborn explained the Constitution as a set of rules that helped the 13 original states get along with each other, similar to rules established by parents for their children.

"If you don't abide by the rules, there's some kind of consequences," she said.

Miss Liberty the bear sang "God Bless America" to celebrate the Constitution's big day, and children celebrated the event with goodie bags of snickerdoodle cookies, candy and other trinkets.

As the party was breaking up, Osborn reminded the children, "Every Sept. 17, I want you to walk outside and say 'Happy birthday, Constitution.'"
