"We're trying to get information to the community on the resources that are available," said Career Services Director Susan Hunter. "Many people don't realize what there is" in the way of such resources.
Representatives from Court Appointed Special Advocate Association, Parents As Teachers, Immigration Services, the Foster Grandparent Program, The Lighthouse Shelter and Marshall-Saline Development Corporation handed out pamphlets and more to help spread awareness of their services.
MVCAA itself had a table where employees collected food and cash for the Community Food Pantry.
This is the first Resource Fair MVCAA has held, said Hunter, but she plans to hold more, perhaps semi-annually and attached to other events to ensure maximum exposure to community members.
Hunter added that anyone interested in receiving a directory of resources available can contact MVCAA to receive such a directory.
According to information from the Coalition on Human Needs dated Sept. 10, 2009, provided by MVCAA Executive Director Pam LaFrenz, the number of poor people in the US in 2008 is the highest that it has been since 1960, at 39.8 million. The poverty rate, at 13.2 percent, is the highest since 1997.
