The Lady Vikings had to come back from a 2-0 deficit in games for a 19-25, 13-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-5 victory. While Valley only had a .082 attack percentage, it attempted 35 more shots than the Lady Eagles. The Lady Vikings had a 104-65 advantage in digs, with 23 by senior Lindsey Tworek -- who also had three of the team's eight aces.
Senior Laura Ten Eyck knocked down a match-high 23 shots for Avila (1-10, 0-3 HAAC). Valley (5-3, 2-1) got 23 assists from junior Paula Tieman, while sophomore Ali Schrader got in on nine blocks.
On Saturday, the Lady Vikings took two home matches, including a 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 19-25, 15-13 marathon against league foe Central Methodist. Mowatt had 19 kills and 19 digs, freshman Brittany Sedillo came up with 26 saves and Schrader and senior Jayme Pettigrew combined for 25 spikes.
Senior Viola Rotich topped the Lady Eagles (3-6, 1-1) with 25 kills and nine block assists.
Valley also swept Southwestern (Kan.), 25-21, 25-19, 25-18 behind the 22 kills split by Mowatt and Schrader.
The Lady Vikings will be in Sioux City, Iowa, Sept. 18-19 for the Morningside Tournament.
Men's Soccer
Sophomore Eduardo Da Silva and senior Miroslav Petrovic's first-half goals were all the Missouri Valley College soccer team needed Saturday to defeat William Woods, 2-0.
The Vikings enjoyed a 14-3 advantage in shots on goal, with senior Carlos Arribas and freshman Lewis Walker taking three each. Senior Igor Lima posted his first shutout of the season.
A header in by sophomore Aaron Streid found the net in overtime Wednesday to give McKendree (Ill.) a 2-1 non-conference decision over the visiting Vikings.
The Bearcats took a 1-0 first-half lead when sophomore Daniele Campailla converted a penalty kick, but Valley tied the match in the 31st minute of the second half when Petrovic converted a feed from freshman Michael Trench.
The Vikings play two matches this weekend at Joliet, Ill., against Mount Mercy (Iowa) on Saturday and host St. Francis on Sunday.
Women's Soccer
Junior Hannah Harrison came up with nine saves during a 2-0 non-conference home shutout for the Valley women's soccer team Saturday against William Woods.
Junior Jessie Yach set up a goal for sophomore Amanda Rainer midway through the first half, then connected on a penalty kick in the 24th minute of the second half.
McKendree limited the Lady Vikings to only three shots on goal Wednesday for a 2-0 non-conference home win. Senior Alex Adams got the Lady Bearcats on the board with seven minutes remaining in the first half, with a penalty kick by senior Sarah Ryan providing some insurance with five minutes left in the match.
The Lady Vikings (2-2) will be at home Saturday against Lyon (Ark.).
