It could get even uglier Saturday if the Chiefs aren't able to cut down the mistakes against a ninth-ranked University Academy team from Kansas City which is loaded with talent.
"We need to value the ball better, make better decisions and execute better," admitted Santa Fe head coach Andy Frerking. Yet, while the offense functioned well at times, tallying 230 total yards, "our bad plays went for [opposing] touchdowns."
On the other hand, Frerking "say some kids do some things I haven't seen them do before, on the positive side." That's something to build on as the Chiefs (0-1) prepare for the Gryphons, who pulled out a 32-26 overtime decision against Class 4 Kansas City Center last week.
Senior quarterback Darrenn White ran for 146 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 183 yards and a pair of scores during that game -- reflecting what he accomplished the previous season, when he gained over 1,000 yards both through the air and ground and accounted for 31 touchdowns.
"He's a dynamite player, very athletic and makes good decisions," Frerking observed. "We've got to do a better job of keeping leverage on the line, keeping him from getting to the sidelines and get a lot of guys on the ball."
If nothing else, Santa Fe will have to reduce their giveaways, for even with a young club, Frerking found seven cough-ups "a little too terrible for my liking."
