Violet Jean Hicks, 78, of Sweet Springs, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, at First Baptist Church in Sweet Springs. Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Sweet Springs. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Born Feb. 4, 1931, in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Robert H. Moore and Ruth Scharnhorst Moore. In 1947, she married Charles F. Hicks, who preceded her in death in 1987. She lived in Sweet Springs most of her life, where she was a homemaker. She and Charles were foster parents for many years, helping raise 53 foster children in their home. She dedicated her life to serving and helping others.
Survivors include three sons, Robert L. Hicks of Sedalia, Gerald "Jerry" Hicks of Sweet Springs and John Hicks of Sweet Springs; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joan Carrender of Sweet Springs and Dena Koch of Concordia; one brother, Bobby Gene Moore of Sweet Springs; and with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Naomi Borem and Linda Hamby; one granddaughter; one grandson; and one brother, Charles Moore.
