Driver, 2 kids, hurt in 1-vehicle crash Thursday

Friday, August 28, 2009
A Gilliam woman was seriously hurt and two young children suffered minor injuries in a one-vehicle crash on state Highway 240 Thursday afternoon, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report.

Rissa J. Stoneking, 31, was taken by Slater ambulance to Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall. Two children, Tyler J. Menaugh and Alana Blogett, both 2, both of Gilliam, were taken by private vehicle to Fitzgibbon hospital, troopers said.

The crash occurred about 3:30 p.m. just west of Orion Avenue. Troopers said Stoneking was westbound in a 2007 Ford when she went off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, returned to the roadway, overcorrected again, went off the right side of the roadway and overturned.

All three occupants of the vehicle were wearing safety devices, according to the report.

No, Jim. My wife has trainning in the medical field and I'm a strong guy. (I can help lift) Plus, I am trained to help with crowd control.

The accident happened near "Orion Ave." on what is known to locals as as "Potts' corner." It is just west of the Brysons' home.

I came upon the accident around 4:20 p.m. the highway was closed off and they were directing traffic. About 5 minutes after I arrived, they opened the highway up. I offered my services, but they had it taken care of.

From what I hear, Alana is fine. (But, as you know the grapevine can be thick.)

Does anyone have ANY information about Rissa's current condition? How serious are her injuries and is she going to be okay?!!

-- Posted by born-n-raised on Fri, Aug 28, 2009, at 9:21 PM

I didn't know that this accident was Rissa. I hope that she is not as seriously hurt as it is said here. I saw when the Fire/Rescue was paged out, but, i didn't know it was her. I hope she recovers fully without any complications and that her daughter and the little boy are fine as well.

I went to school with Rissa. I hope she and her children recover quickly!!

you are right there are numerous reasons as to what caused this accident. Did not mean to offend you in any way. many people just jump in and start blaming this one and that one. My point is let's not blame anyone. I too hope she will be okay. Rissa is a strong person!

God is good to me, I was not blaming the children, I was simply saying that there are numerous reasons other than alcohol or texting that could have been the cause. I just hope everyone will be ok.

pscho101 Thanks you for giving the facts. I hope you will continue to keep us updated on Rissa's condition. I live out of state now and would appreciate the update. Is Alana okay? I hope the boys are doing okay during this time.

It is ridiculous to see all the assumptions on here about texting and alcohol..are you serious? Rissa is a hardworking woman who has 3 children..she is an LPN in our own community and people are on here making stupid assumptions. My brother in law went to the hospital to be with her and she broke her neck in the same vertebrae but in 3 different spots. Her ACCIDENT was NOT caused by any cell phone or alcohol...i think before people talk they need to know the FACTS! We will pray for you Rissa!

Love the Grapes Family!!

I don't think any of the comments were harsh, rather questioning situations we may have witnessed the driver participating in before hand.

I have been recently informed though, that the injuries Rissa incurred are possibly worse than the paper informs us of.... I was told she suffered a broken neck and was flown to Boone County. Also, that Tyler has a broken arm.. Can the democrat verify any of this? Or is it simply another case of the story growing as it goes down the line?

Response by Eric Crump/Editor:
We can only report what the highway patrol provides. Information about patients is very difficult to obtain these days because of federal privacy laws.

Rissa is a friend of mine too and I know she would not do anything to hurt her baby Alana.

IT is sad that people have to be so cruel and assume she was doing something wrong. We cant blame Alana or the other child. I think instead of blaming anyone let's say it was an accident and hope everyone will be okay. Love you Rissa and Alana. My prayers are with you, m.d.

I agree jamhenk...people are way too quick to judge! But then again, maybe those judging have never been in a car with a toddler, let alone two of them.

I hope everything is ok and you get well soon Rissa:)

It was easier to figure out where an accident happened if the report said "County Road number so-and-so" or listed the historic name (Wildcat Road or Thomson Lane, for example). Calling common and special road district gravel roads terms like "Avenue" is confusing. Certain types of public right-of-way (street, avenue, boulevard) are typical of incorporated areas. Terms like "road" and "lane" are typical of rural areas. This is common, consensual, historic terminology. Calling gravel roads outside city limits by more normal terms would be less confusing.

Response by Eric Crump/Editor:
The highway patrol has started using new (and now official) road names. I agree that for a certain transitional period including the old names would be ideal, but when time is short we can't always get that done before publishing the story. It's a goal, though.

Rissa happens to be a friend of mine, and I know she is a good mother who would not intentionally put her children at risk. I cannot believe the comments coming from people, where is the compassion? From someone who cares, I hope everyone is okay, my thoughts are with you.

Why is everyone being so harsh? Did it occur to anyone that maybe she was distracted by a screaming child, or a thrown sippy cup? Judge not lest ye be judged!

Good question Takealoadoff... if it'd have been later in the day, I'd have also wondered about alcohol

-- Posted by importedpeach on Fri, Aug 28, 2009, at 9:53 AM
Response by Eric Crump/Editor:
There was no mention of alcohol in the highway patrol report.

Wonder if she was texting on her cell phone??!!

-- Posted by Takealoadoff on Fri, Aug 28, 2009, at 8:41 AM
Response by Eric Crump/Editor:
The highway patrol report does not indicate the driver was using a cell phone at the time of the accident.

I hope everyone is okay!

What about the accident at the junction of 65 and 20? They had it blocked last night at 5:30ish and a truck was being towed away.
