Joseph "Tuffy" Yates, 86, of Marshall, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, at The Living Center in Marshall.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall, with William W. Harlow officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial with military rites will be in Slater City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to family choice. Born July 21, 1923, in Slater, he was the son of the late Raymond L. Yates and Margarette Sleyster Yates. On June 2, 1946, he married Lucille Persinger Rogers. On Aug. 5, 1985, he married Carol Ives Childers, who survives of the home. He had lived in Saline County most of his life and was a retired carpenter, contractor and mechanic. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of Malta Bend American Legion Post 558 and the veterans group Five by Fivers.
Additional survivors include one son, Gary Yates of Marshall; two daughters, Barbara Jo Cullington of Cortez, Colo., and Christina Repp of Napton; one stepson, Dr. Jerry "Danny" Rogers of Pittsburg, Kan.; one stepdaughter, Connie Smith of Higginsville; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Ruth Samuels of Marshall; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Pat Yates; two stepdaughters, Cindy Childers and Carolyn Jones; one brother in infancy; and three sisters.
