Catherine L. Murphy, 95, of Pilot Grove, formerly of rural Pettis County and Kansas City, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, at Katy Manor in Pilot Grove.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall, with Fr. Kevin Gormley and William W. Harlow officiating. Visitation will held from 10 a.m. Saturday until time of the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Nelson Cemetery near Nelson. Memorials may be made to Katy Manor. Born May 31, 1914, in rural Nelson, she was the daughter of the late John Joseph Murphy and Mary Catherine Carroll Murphy. She attended Postal Grade School and graduated from Mercy Academy in Marshall. She went to summer school in Warrensburg that summer and started teaching at Postal School in the fall at age 18. This was a small one-room school, grades one through eight. She continued going to summer school each summer and taught at several rural local schools until she got her degree from Central Missouri State Teacher's College in Warrensburg. She went on to earn a master's degree from Columbia University in New York in the summer of 1952. She taught briefly in St. Charles; Cincinnati, Ohio; and for many years in Kansas City. Most of her years were teaching kindergarten. She was always such an excellent and dedicated teacher, and a very hard worker. Catherine took care of her parents in their later years. They lived with her in Kansas City for several years. She had always been very involved in the Catholic churches where she lived.

Survivors include two nephews, John Patrick Murphy of the state of Virginia and William L. McGraw of rural Nelson; and one niece, Mary McGraw Quigley of Kansas City.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Agnes Bullard, Margaret McGraw and Anne Norman; four brothers, James Murphy, Julian Murphy, Alfonso Murphy and Eugene Murphy; one nephew, Murphy Conway; and one niece, Joyce Ann Norman.
