MoDOT prepares to mark a beginning and an ending of area bridge projects

Tuesday, July 28, 2009
As the Glasgow Bridge projects nears completion and the Miami Bridge project nears start-up, Missouri Department of Transportation officials are planning to mark both occasions.

Officials announced Tuesday, July 28, the date for a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Glasgow Bridge renovation project.

The ceremony is set for Friday, Sept. 11, at 3 p.m., according to a MoDOT news release.

If possible, the ceremony will take place on the Glasgow end of the bridge, officials said. The alternate location will be in Stump Island Park. The public is invited to attend.

Last week steel girders were set on the final span over the river's navigational channel.

Construction continues as crews work to form and pour the bridge deck and barrier walls. The bridge is scheduled to open to traffic mid-September.

MoDOT officials noted that beginning Tuesday, Aug. 4, the ferry service at Glasgow will be free of charge.

The service operates from 6:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. seven days a week, and it will remain in service until the bridge opens to traffic.

During the ceremony U.S. Sen. Kit Bond and other state and local dignitaries will make brief comments followed by the ribbon cutting.

MoDOT also announced Tuesday a groundbreaking ceremony for the Miami Bridge project, which is scheduled Monday, Aug. 10 at 10 a.m.

The ceremony will be held at the public river access near the bridge.

State and local dignitaries will offer brief comments followed by the groundbreaking.

The public is invited to attend.

The bridge is tentatively scheduled to close to traffic Aug. 10 for up to 12 months.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission approved the $14.8 million dollar contract to OCCI, Inc. of Fulton.

The project calls for a partial replacement of the bridge, nearly identical to what MoDOT has done this year on the Missouri River Bridge at Glasgow.

The overhead truss will be removed along with all the current decking and girders, leaving behind only the large piers in the river.

When completed, the bridge will have new decking and girders and be 26-feet wide (11-foot lanes with two-foot shoulders).

The life expectancy of the new bridge is 50 years or more.
