Agritourism in Saline County took another step forward Friday, July 24 -- two steps, actually -- as the Boonslick Area Tourism Council and resident sponsors dedicated two new barn quilts in the Arrow Rock area.

Representatives from the council met at Elaine Osborn's Maple Crest Farms to dedicate a quilt installed on a barn located 1.2 miles north of Hardeman on Route D.

The council also dedicated a quilt on a barn owned by Robert Thompson located on Route AC.

The new quilts bring the number of barn quilts in Saline County to three -- so far. The first one was dedicated in June 2008 at the home of Carol and Richard Raynor, just east of Marshall on state Highway 240.

The quilts are actually quilt block patterns painted on an 8-foot by 8-foot panel and hung on a barn where they are easily seen from blacktop roads.

Council spokesman Mary Duncan of Arrow Rock said the group's goal is to have 20 barn quilts in three counties -- Saline, Cooper and Howard -- by 2011, and at least one more quilt will be added in each county in coming weeks.

Duncan said sites for the next barn quilts in Saline County include one on state Highway 20 and one on Interstate 70 between Sweet Springs and Emma.

The purpose of this Boonslick Area Tourism Council project is to promote agritourism -- an attempt to attract more people to rural areas. The barns will form a barn quilt trail that will loop through the three counties.

Duncan said the council plans to develop a brochure by next summer that will provide information about the quilts and guide tourists through the barn quilt trail.
