Gerald S. Wood, 87, of Slater, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 3, 2009, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Slater, with Rev. Robert Sisney will officiating. Bethany Weiker, organist, will play "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" and "It Is Well With My Soul." Burial will be in Rehoboth Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Donald Ray Durham, John Markovich, Bob Durham, Mike Huston, Ted Worley and Elisah Durham. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Big Bend Retreat or Rehoboth Cemetery in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.

Born April 20, 1922, in Slater, he was the son of the late Carl E. and Rachel Harris Wood. On Dec. 6, 1941, in Slater, he married Betty M. Keyton, who preceded him in death on May 19, 1972. On Feb. 2, 1974, in Slater, he married Ethel Durham, who preceded him in death on Dec. 12, 2000. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Slater. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in World War II, the Korean conflict and Vietnam for 23 years before his retirement as a master sergeant. He was also a member of American Legion Post 78 in Slater. Following his military retirement, he worked for the City of Slater and Big Bend Retreat.

He is survived by two sons, Donald Wood of Centralia and Jerry Wood of Star, Idaho; two daughters, Marsha Wiseman of Slater and Wanda Giger of Gilliam; six step-sons, Walter A. Durham of Niceville, Fla., Donald Ray Durham of Marshall, Larry Dean Durham of Marshall, Bobby Dale Durham of Sedalia, Olin Wayne Durham of Marshall and Raymond Durham of Higbee; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Sue Huston of Miami.

He was preceded in death by one son, Larry D. Wood, and one step-son, J.E. Durham.
