Donut shop to open Friday night

Friday, June 26, 2009
The Donut Shop, which has been under development on the south side of the Marshall square recently, will open at 10 p.m. Friday, June 26, according to a sign posted at the shop.

Lance Schmidt said several weeks ago that he plans to have the shop open at 10 p.m. every night and stay open until the following morning.

The unusual hours are intended to align with ConAgra shift changes, he said.

aikman8: Sorry for the delay, been out of town, but I think coffee break time would be generally around 10 a.m. People who don't work 8 to 5 are, of course, free to disagree, but I've been in the workforce for, hmmm...more than 40 years, and 10 a.m. seems about right,so closing time might be, say, 11 a.m.

somewhere out there ... i completely agree with you on the plain-jane glazed donuts - i want a place that makes them the old-fashioned way and hope this place does it.

and i also completely agree with you on wanting a local small business to succeed ... was just curious about their plan cuz it seems odd, and i still believe it does. time will tell.

kathy fairchild - what time exactly is morning coffee break, cuz i don't drink coffee and don't have a clue what time that is. so, as a guy who works late and doesn't rise early, but wants a fresh donut, what time is closing time, what time is a morning coffee break? lol.

somewhere out there: Thanks for your comments - they're right on the money. I hope the shop can resolve its issues very soon and get on with the business of selling donuts!

All we know right now is that there are equipment problems. The only number we have is for the shop and at the moment, no one's answering the phone.

sounds great that they are opening, Kudos to any business opening here in Saline County.

"If you walk outside & a truck runs over you on the highway, you will always wonder why you didn't eat another good donut."

quote from an esteemed local physician to me 1 day as I was getting donuts.

So what's the story? Why are they closed? What happened?

Several points have been brought up, and everyone has her/his own value for each...

Glad to know someone is trying to make a move in the downtown scene. I hope it maintains and encourages a safe hangout for youth and young adults. They may not think it hip, but several of us in the not-so-young crowd would have enjoyed a shop like that in our day.

It makes sense to place a small business like that in the heart of downtown, so I doubt it is catering specifically to ConAgra. ConAgra and a few other facilities do have a stable night shift, though. Plus, many other industries start work early in the AM, and many people travel out of town for work. What a great break from the chain restaurants!

Do you see many donut shops open during daylight hours? It takes time to get things ready, to prepare dough, to warm the ovens, to bake an assortment of cakes and such, even for an independent. It's a time sacrifice on the part of the businessman, so don't complain! Some people won't get tired of donuts, they're just grateful there's something to snack on as their day begins/ends in a non-traditional fashion.

Sorry to hear the first round didn't go over well for some, but don't give up hope. Try to support the 'little guys' out there. Glad to hear the night workers are interested!

Yay for the plain-jane glazed donuts!!!

I wasn't to impressed with the donut I had Friday night. I was really expecting more of the Paradise style donuts, and it didn't live up. I'm wiling to give them one more chance since it was a very busy night and apparently there were some issues. But they'd really better pick it up when the re-open because if it taste the same than I'll just stick with wal-mart. We've had the best donut shop in the state w/Paradise, it is hard to settle for anything less when donuts is all you do!

I think there needs to be a place for those of us that work nights and stay up nights to go. Marshall is not exactly night shift friendly!

I kinda got to agree man. At first Im sure that ConAgra will be a big hit. But after a while things get old and they will not want donuts all time. I hope you have a plan B.

I eat my donuts during the day not at night.

How often will con-agra employees eat donuts?

I think the owner doesn't see the big picture here.

Unfortunately, a notice posted on the door of The Donut Saturday morning said, "Closed indefinitely due to mechanical problems." We'll try to find out what's up and when we can hope for a re-opening.

aikman8: The shop will be open past the morning coffee break times of surrounding businesses, at least.

Lance,

I don't know if being on the square will help you or hurt ya, we hope nothing but the best for you and thanks for all the hard work.

I wish Lance well.

stay open until the following morning .. what exactly does that mean? how late, or early? i can't think that many others would wake up at 530 or 6 just to go get a donut, and if you get them at 10 at night and save them for the next day, well, you've defeated the whole purpose of having a fresh donut.

i'm wondering if this place has put too much value on the conagra shift changes and is ignoring a much larger market?

just a few thoughts, curious what others think? i wish them well!
