Mary Christene Townsend, 91, of Marshall, formerly of Arrow Rock, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at Westport Estates Assisted Living in Marshall.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall, with Rev. Randy Shannon and William W. Harlow officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Arrow Rock Cemetery. Born Feb. 20, 1918, in Cooper County, she was the daughter of the late Hugo J. Katemann and Emma Louise Brewe Katemann. On March 6, 1942, she married Arvel N. Townsend, who preceded her in death on July 16, 2004. She had lived in the Arrow Rock community most of her life and was a cook in the 1950s for Arrow Rock School. In 1963, she began working at the Arrow Rock Post Office and was appointed postmaster in 1971, the position she held until her retirement in 1997. She was also a homemaker. She was a lifetime member of Zion United Church of Christ in Arrow Rock and in later years attended Marshall Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one son, Terry W. Townsend and his wife, Linda, of Marshall; one daughter, Christa Townsend and her husband, Kerlin Butchee, of Olathe, Kan.; one grandson, Terry A. Townsend and his wife, Stacey; two great-grandchildren, Kellin and Haidyn Townsend; and several nieces and nephews including special nephew, Clifford W. Katemann.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Quentin Katemann.
