Marshall farmers market opens season

Saturday, May 23, 2009

Market on the Square, Marshall's farmers market, started its second season under sunny skies -- or rather, shaded from sunny skies under the canopy on the former Silverthorn building at the northeast corner of the square.

The market will take place on the east sidewalk this year, relocated from the courthouse lawn by renovation work.

Organizers said they were pleased with the turnout of vendors and patrons and hope to see the event grown throughout the season.

  • A suggestion to the organizers. If a person driving around the square didn't know there was a farmer's market there today, they had a difficult time seeing it because of the vehicles parked in front of the vendors. I was around the square three or four times and each time there were larger vehicles (like Suburbans, vans, etc) parked there and blocking the view. Not sure if they were from the participants or people who had pulled in to shop. Maybe several parking spaces could be blocked off from parking or even be vendor spots. Is that a possibility? It wasn't very visible.

  • i'd love to see this become a weekly or bi-weekly thing. would buy local in a heartbeat if they provided it.

  • Tori: Good suggestion! I will pass it along to the organizers. I imagine merchants on the east side will not want to give up too many spots, but maybe just a few would help. There's been talk about making a couple of signs, too, which would also increase visibility.

  • It IS weekly thing, starting yesterday. Every Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon, through Labor Day. What's for sale will vary weekly.

As to the parking spaces, most who parked there were shoppers, either at the market or elsewhere. We asked the vendors to park across the street.

  • I'm all for the idea of the farmer's market. I just don't understand why the "Marshall farmer's market" is being held on the square when there is already an informal farmer's market in the old walmart/aldi parkinglot. The old walmart parking lot has way more space for vendors and on any given saturday morning you can get barbeque as well as fresh produce.

  • dhok: The location on the square has the advantage of a considerable amount of shade and a restroom for the vendors. It's also a good way to bring traffic to the downtown merchants. Any vendor who wants to join the market on the square on Saturday mornings is more than welcome to be there. There is no charge for a space. And as long as we're notified in advance so we can arrange for parking, whoever sells barbeque is welcome, too.
