Memorial Day ceremony to be held on Marshall square

The Saline County Composite Squadron of the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol will host the annual Memorial Day Observance Service Monday morning, May 25, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Veteran's Memorial on the southeast corner of the Marshall Square.

The speaker for this observance will be Sgt. 1st Class Shawn McBee. McBee has been a member of the Missouri National Guard for 17 years. He grew up in Braymer and now lives in Corder.

McBee has been deployed in support of Operation Noble Eagle 2004 and Operation Enduring Freedom 2006-2008. He is currently assigned as Battalion Fire Direction Chief with the 129th Field Artillery Regiment in Maryville.

In addition, McBee recently spent one year with the 1128th Forward Support Company in Marshall as acting Readiness NCO and is currently working at Missouri Valley College as an ROTC instructor.

American Legion Post 191 and VFW Post 2646 will present the rifle Honor Guard before taps is played, ending the ceremony. Along with the American Legion and VFW Color Guard, the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Color Guard will present the colors for the ceremony under the direction of Cadet 1st Lt. John Adderley.

A wreath will be laid in honor of all veterans by local veterans organizations and the Marshall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Special awards will be presented to various area veterans during the ceremony.

The public is invited to attend this 40-minute ceremony. Handicap parking close to the activity and chairs will be available.

Arrow Street, running along the south side of the Marshall Square, will be blocked off to regular traffic from 9:15 a.m. until the close of the service in cooperation with Marshall Police Department.
