High school baseball roundup

Tuesday, May 12, 2009
Santa Fe 14, Wentworth Military 1

ALMA -- After scratching out an unearned run in the top of the third inning, Wentworth Military Academy realized that trying to make up a double-digit deficit against the top-ranked Santa Fe baseball team was an exercise in futility.

Monday's non-conference game was stopped with the Chiefs leading, 14-1.

The Red Dragons (2-8) managed only one hit against all-state senior Taylor Wesley, who struck out six of the 10 batters he faced. Meanwhile, Santa Fe had 15 hits in 20 at-bats -- including two-run homers from Wesley in the first and senior Ben Catlett and junior Matt Lovercamp in the second.

Lovercamp had three hits and scored three runs for the Chiefs, in their first outing since seeing their school-record 28-game win streak snapped Thursday at Higginsville.

Santa Fe (10-1) is scheduled to plat at St. Paul today.

Brunswick 2, Slater 0

BRUNSWICK -- Sophomore Scott Steiman tossed a five-hit shutout and scored the only run he needed Monday during a 2-0 victory by Brunswick (2-3) over the visiting Slater baseball team.

Steiman crossed on sophomore Joe Hartman's two-out single in the bottom of the first inning. Hartman also singled home a run in their third after a pair of two-out errors by the Wildcats.

The loss wasted a strong outing by Slater sophomore Levi Thomas, who surrendered only five hits and one earned run while striking out 11. The Wildcats got only one runner past second base, when sophomore Jacob Brumit singled and advanced to third on a steal and ground out in the fifth.

Thomas also had two hits for Slater (2-10), which is scheduled to wind up its regular season at home Thursday against Sweet Springs.

Sacred Heart 9, Sweet Springs 3

SEDALIA -- Junior Sam Liston didn't allow an earned run and struck out nine for Sacred Heart during Wednesday's 9-3 win over the Sweet Springs baseball team at Sedalia.

It wasn't that Liston never ran into trouble, with five errors and seven Greyhound hits creating jams. However, he usually got out of it, Sweet Springs stranding 11 runners -- five during the last two innings.

Senior Bryce Stephens, sophomore Wes Register, junior Jacob Harlan and freshman Cale Spangler each had two-run hits for the Gremlins (6-6) -- Spangler's single breaking a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the third.

Junior Aaron Schlatweiler and senior Blake Vogelsmeier both had two-hit games, the duo combining for all three of the runs for Sweet Springs (4-9).
