John Andrew Mull, 89, of Kenner, La., died Thursday, May 7, 2009.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, May 16, 2009, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto, Ill., for him and his wife, Rose Lee Mull, who preceded him in death. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or to Serenity Hospice, 3712 MacArthur Blvd., Suite 204, New Orleans, LA 70114.
He was born Aug. 9, 1919, the son of John Paul and Selena Mull in Shackleford. He married Rose Lee Patterson on May 1, 1941; she preceded him in death in 2003. He earned a bachelor's degree from Missouri Valley College in Marshall. He did some graduate work at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., and later received a master's degree from University of Colorado. He spent 15 years as a teacher, coach and first principal of Civic Memorial High School in Bethalto before starting Bethalto Insurance Inc., which was licensed and operated in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Missouri. In addition, he served on a number of professional and civic organizations. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Kenner. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 876 in Marshall and fourth degree member of Council 4688 in Alton, Ill. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and lifetime member of American Legion Post 558 of Malta Bend. He retired to Metairie, La., in 2005.
He is survived by four children, John W. Mull of Independence, Robert L. Mull of Diamond, Ill., Michaelene M. Willman of Metairie and Kristen E. Hembrough of Franklin, Tenn.; one brother, Bob Mull of Fairhope, Al., formerly of Malta Bend; one sister, Dorothy Stunkel of Columbia; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Andrea Lynn Cook in 1977.
