Adventures in Libraryland: Marshall library receives grant for new microfilm scanner -- help from community still needed for matching funds

Wednesday, April 8, 2009
I am happy to announce that the library has received a grant from the Missouri State Library that will provide funds for the purchase of a digital microfilm scanner for our genealogy room.

Those of you who have had the opportunity to access our genealogy room are aware that the materials we have make our genealogy room among the top ten in the state.

We have microfilm dating back to the Civil War period.

Our current microfilm reader was purchased in 1990 and the model was discontinued seven years ago.

For those involved in genealogical and historical research, the benefit of the digital scanner is the improved image quality and the capability for scanning and digitizing images.

A new digital microfilm reader will cost right around $9,300.

The grant will provide $6,800 and requires matching funds of $2,500.

The catch is that we need to raise the funds within two weeks in order to be able to accept the grant.

The library has been contacted by a generous donor who will provide one-fourth of that amount.

We have also negotiated a trade-in of $300 for the old microfilm reader.

What we need now is for community members to provide the remaining $1,575.

If you feel that you can help the genealogy room continue to provide quality service to the community, please contact me at 660-886-3392 or at crumpa@marshallpublib.org.

Mark your calendars! In recognition of April being "Stress Reduction Month" the Marshall Public library is honored to have Marshall's own international trainer and speaker Dr. Dee Yoh returning to present a talk "Stop Pulling Out Your Hair! 4 Steps to Relieve Stress."

The presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, April 21, at 7 p.m.

Part of the content of her talk will come from the newly released book "15 Winning Ways to Better Living" in which Dee is a featured author.

The title of her chapter, "Get Off My Last Nerve!" helps people understand how we create upsets in our life and gives strategies in dealing with them.

Dee has been described as "fun and engaging with a powerful message."

Dee will be available after the talk to sign copies of the book.
