The inclement weather for Slater's Steve McQueen Days hasn't dampened the zeal of the "city of festivals" for hosting special occasions. At the Slater City Council meeting Tuesday, April 7, Mayor Stephen Allegri announced two upcoming events and reported on the Days, held on March 27 and 28.
World League Wrestling is coming to Slater on April 18. The show will be held at the school gymnasium, and wrestlers will sign autographs at Ole Town Pizzaria at 3:30 p.m., Assistant City Administrator Gene Griffith said.
Begun last year, the glass convention returns to Slater on April 23-25. The event, which is a showcase for glass artists and their works, is free and open to the public.
About Steve McQueen Days, Allegri said, "The weather did play havoc on it, I'm sorry to say. I really feel the foundation has been laid for this to be one of the biggest events in Saline County."
Council member Terry Jordan reported that the McQueen car show, which was canceled due to the weather, has been rescheduled for Saturday, September 19, which is during Slater's fall festival.
Slater will also host a meeting of the Missouri Municipal League, council member Ron Monnig said. The gathering is scheduled for Thursday, May 28.
In new business, the council approved bids for the demolition of two houses. Wayne Brown Enterprises Inc. of Gilliam was the low bidder, estimating $3,875 for one house and $3,850 for the other, and was awarded the contract.
Other council members present at the meeting were Cathy Jeffries, Ruby Romine, Harry Lightfoot and Rex Cantlin.
The council's next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening, April 21, at 7 p.m. It will begin with a public hearing concerning a grant for the city's storm sewers.
