Rural fields, lawns vandalized

Wednesday, April 1, 2009
Editor's note: Our policy is to withhold the names of people allegedly involved in crimes until formal charges have been filed.

A rural Miami man was arrested late Friday, March 27, following reports from several area residents of a Ford F-350 truck being driven through fields and lawns in the area of County Roads 202, 206, 213, 215, 216 and 219.

According to an incident report filed by Sheriff's deputies, the driver of the truck, accompanied by at least one passenger, damaged residential yards, wheat fields and corn fields on the property of at least five area farmers and property owners. Several residents reported observing the truck spinning its wheels and turning "donuts" in fields and yards in nearly a dozen locations.

The man was taken into custody and questioned at Saline County Justice Facility before being released early Saturday morning. No formal charges had been filed as of Wednesday morning, April 1.

While I agree his actions are inappropriate and he made a poor decision, my question is why is this individual being charged when other members of our community have committed similar or worse crimes but don't get charged? Not too long ago a young man, while intoxicated damaged property at someone's residence and then proceeded to steal a car and then get it stuck in a field, but he didn't stop there, he proceeded to burn the engine up and the car. To this date, no charges have been filed for what appears to be something far worse than doing donuts in some yards and fields. Rumors have it that the young man's family paid for a new car. Does this mean we can buy our way out of trouble? How come this individual can't pay to have some grass sowed and fix the ruts? Can someone explain this?

Don't count on charges being filed. It ain't gonna happen. Not for these people in this county.

If formal charges are filed the names of the accused will be published, as is our policy.

I agree muddy....someone did that to my lawn a few years back. Nothing more frustrating than fixing damage caused by someone else and you don't even know who did it!

The Judge needs to make both of them go to all of the locations they damaged and fix the areas with only a rake and a shovel. A hand full of blisters would help them think better..
