Lady Vikings split again at Tucson

Friday, March 20, 2009
TUCSON, Ariz. -- It was another win-one, lose-one day -- the third in a row -- for the Missouri Valley College softball team Tuesday at the Tucson Invitational.

The loss was a hard one to take after the Lady Vikings rallied from a 2-0 deficit on senior Lindsey Stapp's two-run inside-the-park homer with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Huntington (Ind.) won it in the eighth, 3-2.

The Foresters (4-1) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth on RBI singles from freshmen Brandi Gower and Jeanine Vaszari -- who ended up crossing with the winning run on an error after being placed on second base to begin the extra frame under the college tiebreaker system.

Trinity Christian (Ill.) would be in no position to steal a win, Valley rolling to an 11-1, five-inning victory. The Trolls (0-7) got their only run on freshman Allison Cable's first-inning single.

Freshman Janie Jungerman wouldn't allow another run, and only one more hit, the rest of the way and got plenty of support -- beginning with senior Kimberly Fuller's go-ahead two-run dinger in the top of the second.

Junior Sydney Kaneshiro followed with a double and trotted home on a bases-loaded walk later in the frame.

The Lady Vikings packed the sacks with no outs in the fourth, scoring five runs on a double by junior Janae Borrego and singles from senior Heather Sliger, Fuller and Kaneshiro. Borrego, Sliger and Kaneshiro had RBI singles in the three-run fifth.

Valley (10-10) wraps up its desert trek with a pair of games both today and Saturday.
