The two men suffered minor injuries Thursday afternoon in the crash on U.S. Highway 65, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report.
Lewis G. Edde, 37, of Malta Bend, and Stephen S. Nicholson, 35, of Miami, were hurt when a 2005 Nissan Frontier driven by Nicholson apparently struck the rear of a 2009 Kenworth Conventional driven by Gary D. Griffit, 35, of Miami, according to the MHSP report.
Nicholson's vehicle then went off the left side of the road.
The crash occurred about 1:20 p.m. as Griffit was northbound on U.S. 65 and slowing to make a left turn at County Road 413, troopers said.
Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene at the request of troopers to help locate the two men.
Several citizens who work in the area observed the men deputies sought and had apparently detained the men while deputies were enroute to the scene.
Edde and Nicholson were taken to Fitzgibbon Hospital for treatment after being taken to the Saline County jail.
MSHP arrest reports indicate both men had arrest warrants on file -- Nicholson for a probation violation and Edde for an outstanding felony warrant in Benton County -- and were taken to the Saline County jail before being transported to the hospital.
The investigation continues. Saline County sheriff's deputies assisted at the scene.

Normally I do not respond to comments made on-line but since Mr. Griffitt is my brother it has angered me at some of the comments made. In case anyone has not realized Mr. Griffitt is the driver of the semi.
After several days in pain he finally went to the Dr. and found to have a broken wrist, which he will not let them cast because he still has to work everyday and having a cast on prevents him from doing his job, and having a tear in his shoulder. I ask you, who will pay for this? Certainly not the owner of the vehicle as they had no insurance. My brother continues to work because he pays his insurance!!!
Obviously some of you do not have jobs or you would not have all this time to post unneccesary comments.
As for Shane and his family I know his sister and she is as good as gold. I do not know Shane or Lewis but I hope they get better. I feel what they did is wrong but that is as far as
it goes, it is done and over with now and you should get on with your lives and let the people involved get on with theirs. LET IT GO PEOPLE!!!!
The kind of warrant he had out of Benton County was not one that he was being hunted down for. If he got pulled over then they would have transfered him, as they did.
There was no chance of myself getting in trouble for this reason. That is one reason why I think when all this got published, it was worded wrong. And people got the wrong ideal.
Ok, will do.
THANKS!!!!!!! Saline County Law Enforcement Officers. Marshall, Slater, and Sweet Springs P.D's, Sheriff's Department, all reservists and MSHP.
I'm sure you don't hear it enough, but you are appreciated and I say, Thank you and keep doing a FANTASTIC job.
Obviously there is some confusion on here once again. Let me set the record straight...
1. Lewis does not live with his parent. He owns a home and lives with his wife and kids.
2. Lewis and Shane got into a wreck. There was no drugs or nothing involved in the wreck. Just a straight out accident. The kind that happens everyday regardless how a person drives.
3. I can not speak for Shane because I do not know him that well, but I can tell you Lewis is not on drugs at this time in his life.. Ask me how I know... because I am around him everyday. We go to church together. We eat together. We spend good ol' family time together doing things thats don't include drugs. So to all that want to make an accusation about the drugs... YOUR WRONG.
Wonder who I am to say this??? I am his sister-in-law, his friend and the mother of his neice and nephew. And I have never met someone with a bigger heart than Lewis.
So go ahead and say what you will because it really doesn't matter. Get your kicks the only way you know how. Praise the WONDERFUL saline county law enforcement for what ever it is that they do so well... I will be praying for you.
And now a word for Shanes family. May God Bless each and everyone of you, and may he keep you strong during times like these. And please never live to be ashamed of what is published or what people may say on here because People talked bad about Jesus, there sure going to talk bad about us. Please know that there are so many more good people in this world that understand what you are going through then the few that come on this page to get their 5 minutes of fame. God Bless.
I was in the circle acouple of years ago! Addiction to Meth is a very powerful thing to over come.let me tell you IT CAN BE DONE! Yes i too lost my father at a very young age and my mother was an alcoholic. So all odds were against me, But prison alone will make a person worse, because your around alot of other crimnals, who can only teach you more games to play.A person that has been an addict for years needs to be taught to live a normal life again-step by step! And it is the people you choose to be around, you lose yourself ,mind & health.Their grown men that made the wrong choices to keep on making worst choices. So as far as " woe is me" they are adults, they know right from wrong, theyve tried to escape this powerful addiction, but couldnt. So No i dont think prison is good for anyone. Prison needs to have more rehabilatation programs!
Ok, so most of us agree that these 2 people that were running from law should get some help. If there is an addiction, just like with a persistent DUI offender, lock them up away from their families and then let the NA come to them! Yes this is hard on the families not being able to see their loved ones as they normally do, but you will always know where the loved one is. You won't have to worry if they are dead on the street. You won't have to worry that they will be in another accident and harm themselves or an innocent bystander. This article explains that these people were already wanted by the police for warrants and probation violations. The police don't have time to go knocking on doors to find them, nor do the tax payers want to pay for them to be rehabbed in jail, but I would rather my tax dollars go to the criminal in jail than to have MY loved one dead or harmed from their addictions or "diseases". Be real here, this harms all involved and the community, think of someone else and not just yourself when i comes to these 2.
I'd high-five ya, Yeehaw, but I'm afraid you'll have to come to me to do that.
In a moment of weakness, I suddenly decided to sever both of my legs with fingernail clippers. It was a lengthy process and a bloody mess, but I have succeeded in permanently changing who I am--forever. The government has yet to provide me with my tax-payer subsidized electric wheelchair, so I'm asking you to go out of your way involuntarily to accomodate the celebratory slapping of the palms we mutually desire.
I have a "disease".
On the other hand--lying here a helpless victim of MYSELF--I'm an easy "chest bump" :)
Oh yea, you mind bringing my kid some prime rib? The food stamps haven't showed up yet either.
Thanks, Yeehaw. I know you understand.
By the way, did I mention I will never pay you back?
Ok Troygilpin,
If I was diagnosed with a disease....A disease that could wipe out my family by being around me...then I say lock me away. If I could be cured, like you say....then lock me away until I am better. If I come back out of the hospital or wherever, and contract the "disease" again because "I" chose not to change my lifestyle...then lock me away forever. You don't seem to get it. Or at least the part about looking in the mirror and taking responsibility for one's actions.
The people who have no understanding at all at what their talking about have put themselves upon a self righteous pedestal. They slap each other high-fives every time one of us is victimized by the so called law enforcement and sent away because of this disease. Drug addiction is recognized as a disease by the American Medical Association (AMA)and is a treatable disease. If you out there on your high horses caught a disease how would you like it if you got taken away from your family and locked away seemingly forever with murderers and robbers? How does that help? Your attempts at building yourselves up at the expense of diseased people show clearly how uneducated and shallow some of you are. Look in the mirror, it could be YOU tomorrow. I remember when I used to say that I would never be weak enough to try or use drugs and then it happened to me.
To Butercupp I want to thank you for your words to the family. And yes They have to truely want help before it all works. And please everybody I wasn't trying to make any excuses for this kids. But maybe a reason for lewis actions. I have sit up so many nights trying to find the answers to why kids have these problems today. And I truely don't believe it's because of their family. But I do believe it is a diease because I have talked to seven doctors about this matter, and they all agree it is a disease. And out of 100 only about 10 can be truely cured.
Hey by the way who were the citizens that happen to apprehend?
Drugs come into it because that is what they are known for, so everyone is going to assume that is what was going on. I'm not going to lie, that's just what I thought when I heard about this. Actually nobody really knows what was going on when this all took place except for the people involved. Not trying to offend anyone, but this is just what people do, get on hear and make assumptions. I do know that when stuff like this gets broadcasted, it sometimes is made sound worse than it really was. A family member of mine got into some trouble a few years ago and their name was slammed all over the radio for 2 days and it sounded worse than it actually was on their part. They just happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, and believe me, they have paid for this, one of the people who were actually the one who did the crime, ran, eventually caught and their name was never broadcasted like the others. So people are going to make what they want out of this. But it does sound like the two of them are having a hard time learning how to stay out of trouble. Each and every one of us are our own person and we decide to make the choices we make, we might have some persuasion, but the finally call is our own. If it makes the family feel any better just remember, it doesn't really matter how much the family wants for them to stay out of trouble or tries to help them, they have to want to help themselves. Just try your best to get through this tuff time, I know it isn't easy.
Lets just call all drug use an addiction, make excuses for doing it, attach a physical and mental fancy name to it, get a doctor to say they are all disabled from it and give them all Social Security Disability!! The new federal welfare program... Then every doper will have an excuse to not do what's right or make any judgement about anything in life. Then they will all have a professional excuse for doing drugs and it will keep them all out of jail.
Time for people to quit making statements about "oh they were running with the wrong crowd again"...Hey Folks when you are running with the wrong crowd, then you are apart of the wrong crowd!!! Excuses, Excuses, No One wants to take responsibility for their own actions these days!
It's no problem at all, Eric. I knew I was pushing the envelope...just a tad. I could have used less descriptive adverbs and been more vague, but I believe the zeal would have been sacrificed.
Oh well. Other battles--other warfronts:)
Hey, maybe "intolerance" could be labeled as a disease I could seek help for?
Guess not:(
Ok, so let me get this correct? You can do whatever you want if you father passes when you are young? Not likely! I lost my mother when I was 8 and I did not grown up to be a bad kid or an adult! I have never been in the pokey! Quit making excuses for these people and many more like them and quit enabling them! Put them out on the street and let them try to survive! This is just ridiculous! When either of these 2 hurt someone ya gonna make more excuses then? It is hard to tell a child to get out and make it on their own, but if they cannot do it themselves you have to force it! Force them to get a job and take care of their responsibilities!
I've known Lewis my entire life and he is one of the better people I have known. I haven't seen him in a few years and I hate to hear that he's dodging the law, or was. But he is good people obviously caught up in some bad s**t. I hope that he doesn't get much time at all so maybe he can have some kind of life. I am still grateful that I didn't get in trouble in Saline County. The courts there have no understanding and think that long sentences is the answer which it's not. We'll be praying for Lewis and his family.
to all the people and there comments about Lewis and shane. Boy let us get to the facts about this two kids. I think I read a remark about how these kids wasn't raise right. Well I am here to tell you all, as for lewis thats my dead brother son. Lewis father die when he was about Eight or nine. There were five kids and they were all very young when there father die. I know for a fact these kids have never gotten over the death of there farther. they loved their dad very much. And for raising Lewis up right. My brother took his kids to church every sunday. And layed the law down about right and wrong. And I belive lewis has alot resentment about not have his dad. Because I seen a change in him. It was like he didn't care anymore. And yes he started getting in trouble. So don't be saying its because they weren't raised right. And I want to say I have known Shane since he was little. He spend alot of time with his aunt when he was younger. I know that shane is a good kid. And I know what his mother is going threw. I know the sleepless nights she had worry about Shane. Trying to help him talking to him. And she is right. this is a disease. It is something that has a hold of them And won't let them go. And yes we all need to be praying for them. I pray for them all every night. So please can we try to understand what this does to them their lives and what it does to the familey of these kids. Untill you been in their shoes you will ever know.
Ok, just because I want to add to the discussion:
The truck was going to make a left hand tun and had his signal on. The truck then began to pass him as to avoid a rear end collision, there isn't much of a shoulder there. So obviously they were trying to avoid rear ending the semi, however once the accident happened and the vehicle rolled over the 2 parties did get out of the vehicle and run. Why run, face the music and be a man like mommadoe says. Does he only want treatment because he got caught. Sure I would too if that would get me out of prison. One of ya is already out of jail and gonna do it again. Who is gonna pay for the damages to these vehicles? Doesn't seem like they are. Get your lives together QUICKLY and quit the nonsense. The familes of these gentlemen need to quit enabling their habits and force them to make better decisions. The more you help people with an addiction, no matter what the addiction the more they will abuse it. Get them out of your house and FORCE them to go do something with their lives, or you will continue to see the same behavior. At this age, they do know better.
No offense to Shane's family, but maybe muddywater has a point. I think prisons do need to make these guys do a little manual labor to think about why they're really there. It's not suppose to be a picnic! As for Shane needing help, yes he does! He also needs a role model or a father figure, yes as old as he is. I don't think he ever had one, you live what you've learned. I believe this was an accident, or maybe a wake up call. He needs to get help, get the hell out of Marshall, and away from all the wrong people because he's not strong enough to stay around here anymore. I hope THIS time he gets it together.
God bless you mommadoe and pray for muddywaters.that person needs Jesus.
I'm no expert with any of this (maybe someone reading is/or knows a little about it), however as a reasonable person, I would like to think there are different treatment programs or organizations out there, which would be beneficial to these two, either in or out of jail. I feel they would become more productive and do greater things in the community, if they would find the determination inside themelves, to #1, wanna change, and #2, pick a new group of people to associate with, ie.."If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, or quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck". At this time, I would like step down off of my soap and finish watching my dvr'd ghosthunters episodes.
For those of you that wants to cast stones, you need to look in your own driveways! There isn't a soul that is perfect. I doubt if there is anyone of us that hasn't commited a felony at one time or another. They just didn't get caught at it."Muddywater",you saythat my son likes it in prison? Then you tell me why he got out and run! I also wonder why you are up all hours of the nights and what really gives you the right to be judging other people. I'm also curious how "marshall,mo.resident" would know so much about the the crowd my son was running with! Was it one your crowd? and where did he or she get the slang,"popped"! It really makes a person wonder! Those of you that thinks they belong in prison must n0t understand the addiction, which is a disease. They need help, not punishment! My son is going to ask for treatment. Iknow my son better than I know anyone in this world and I also have known Lewis since he was a young boy and both of them are hard working men with hearts of gold.If anyone knows addiction like I know it then you would realize that it is heartbreaking for the addict and his family and it is almost impossible to kick. They need our prayers, not negative comments. I really pity of those that are oblivios to this disease. I hope that one day they can open their eyes and heart. Everyone will stand before god to be judged one of these days. It is better to show compassion and love than to say cruel and hurtful things. you would be suprised how much better it would make you feel. Oh,and by the way it was an accident. The 2005 nissan did not rearend the semi.At least get your facts straight before you go to bad mouthing someone! Mr.Griffit was not hurt and if you are so curious about the owner and what he thinks, why don't you give him a call?Maybe that would ease your mind!I thank the Lord every day that no one was hurt or killed. It honestly was an accident; but I wonder if my son,Lewis, or Mr.Griffit would have gotten killed, would you be giving your condolences or would you be saying "that's what they deserve"? THIS IS HOW CRUEL I FEEL LIKE SOME OF YOUR COMMENTS WERE! MOMMADOE
1
No but rear-ending someone hard enough to roll a truck is clearly putting someone else's life in danger. Luckily Mr. Griffit is fine. And I would love to know what Mr. Knott's opinion is.
Muddy water,
Maybe you should read the article again. This wreck did not happen because of criminal activity. It was an accident. The only thing that was criminal about Shane and Lewis' actions that day was the fact that they got out of the truck and ran. They did not run because they had done anything wrong that day, they ran because they both had warrants and obviously did not want to go to jail. I hardly think that two guys running across a field is putting other people's lives in danger.
Law Enforcement prays everyday that people like these two don't kill anyone when they are doing their criminal actions.
The problem is that most inmates that I've seen suddenly get Jesus everytime they go to jail, then leave him at the door when they leave.
I pray that god gives the justice system the wisdom to decide if career criminals should stay in prison the rest of their life to keep them from harming others...
To All Who Have Posted Comments,
Who are you to be so quick to judge these two people? There is only one true judge and that is GOD himself! Instead of criticising them, you should be praying for them and their families. I am sure all of you have skeletons in your closet that you are glad no one knows about. But I assure you that Lewis doesn't care what the world knows about him. He's not hiding anything. He has Jesus in his life and he will overcome all of this. Oh and about the prison thing..(living for free) stuff you all talk about. Is that really what you think they want??? You couldn't be more wrong. But I am leaving it at that. I pray for each and everyone of you. God Bless.
Hi I know this is bad of these guys But with one of them being my cousin we are use to it. I know it is sad and we all knew in this guys family that it was going to happen.
Stiffler,
Whatever.. There is no surprise to this..
Same Ol' Same.... What a suprise...
marshallmoresident
Amen, you hit the nail on the head. There is a revolving door with these two.
The State needs to make Prisons what they were intended to be. Take away the cable TV, the exercise rooms, the candy, soda and snacks, the basket balls, the cigarettes and the state taxpayer paid allowances given free to inmates just to lay around in prison.
Go back to chain gangs, road repairs, clean up details and breaking rocks. Shoot anyone who tries to run. A 10 year sentence should be 10 years, not 2 years.
They will be to tired at the end of the day to cause trouble and it would be a great incentive to never go back to prison again. What the state is doing with their baby camps now, sure isn't working today!
Doesn't surprise me one bit that the two of them are in trouble again.. Mr. Nicholson (Shane as everyone in Marshall knows him) hasn't been out very long at all maybe a little over a year if even that long and he started his crap right back up, running with the same ole crowd he ran with before and most of them have been popped at some point in time and a couple just a few months ago. .. Haven't heard much about Mr. Eddie This is nothing new for these two, seems they are having a hard time learning.. Oh well so it will be back to the pokey and the working people can pay their way.. Imagine that.. I don't know much about prison but I think they should make these people start doing some real work and make them pay for being in prison, Honestly I think some of these people who keep going back really want to be in there, so they don't have to work have a place to lay their head down at night and get a free meal and get attention from people, yes I said attention, some people thrive on this kind of attention...
SWEET!!
