Adventures in Libraryland: Library on the Web: Place book holds from home

Thursday, March 12, 2009

In our second week of examining online services available through our website, we will go through the steps to place a hold from the comfort of your own home computer. First, go to our library's website -- http://www.marshallpublib.org -- and click on Catalog.

If you would like us to have a book ready for you at the front desk, use the catalog to search for the book.

Your results will be in a list and under each item on that list, you will see the words "Place Hold."

Click on those words.

You will be prompted to use your library card number and pin number to complete this action. (If you need to get your pin number, we will be happy to give it to you the next time you are in the library.)

We check the hold requests daily. If the item is on the shelf, we will pull it for you and call you to let you know the item is now available.

We will hold it at the front desk for three days. If the item is checked out, any holds will be activated when the book is returned.

When your hold is available, we will call you to let you know the book is available and will hold it for three days.

After three days, the book is returned to the shelves.

There are two important things to remember about book holds.

The first is to remember that the book is not available until we call you.

The second thing to remember is that the item must be checked out on the card that was used to place the hold so if you send a family member to get the book, they must have your library card.

The first meeting of our play-reading group is set for Wednesday, March 18, at 7 p.m.

Whether you like the great works of Shakespeare, the dramas of Arthur Miller or the light comedy of Neil Simon, you will want to participate in this play-reading group.

Members read aloud from favorite works. No dramatic experience is required.

The title for March is "The Crazy Quilt Club," featuring Veronica Blather, a sweet little old lady who spends most of her time knitting and solving murders -- most occur whenever she shows up.
