Mid-Day Optimists to hold annual adult team spelling bee March 7

Thursday, March 5, 2009
It is not too late to register for the 10th annual Adult Team Spelling Bee hosted by the Mid-Day Optimist Club of Marshall, co-chair Michelle Pointer said.

Teams for the bee are composed of four people, and the registration fee is $100 per team.

The event is this Saturday, March 7, at 5:30 p.m. in the Knights of Columbus Hall. Doors open at 5 p.m., and there will be both silent and live auctions, as well as appetizers and drinks.

Club President Bob Stewart will emcee the event, which serves as the Optimists' major fundraiser for the year, to help raise money for the youth of Saline County. A special wheelbarrow full of items will be auctioned, and the proceeds will go to the newly established Dr. James P. Igo Memorial Scholarship.

In 2008, the spelling bee raised just over $5,000, Pointer said. Her goal for this year is $10,000.

Pointer encouraged anyone interested to sign up to spell, or act as moral support.

"If they don't want to come spell," she said, "they can come to cheer people on. It's a great time."

To register for the spelling bee, call Pointer at 886-8557.
