Wallace D. Hitaffer, 85, of La Monte, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, at Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at Heckart Funeral Home in Sedalia, with Rev. Gene Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Heckart Funeral Home in Sedalia. Casket bearers will be Leonard Huddleston, Jim Carroll, Jerry VanWinkle, Paul Rieckhoff, Dwayne Rieckhoff and Mark Rieckhoff. Honorary bearers will be Eldon Rieckhoff and John Huston. Burial with military honors will be in Slater Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to Mid-Missouri Humane Society or Children's Therapy Center. He was born March 17, 1923, in Saline County, a son of George Donald and Katherine Kitchen Hitaffer. On Aug. 28, 1952, in Harrison, Ark., he married Daisy Irene Narron, who died Jan. 22, 2002. He was a cattleman and livestock dealer, and co-owner of Holden Packing Company. He was a member of the Cattlemen's Association. He loved all animals, especially dogs and horses. He had a big heart for stray animals and gave them homes over the years. He was a loving caregiver for his wife for many years. He was a 1941 graduate of Slater High School and was an Air Force veteran of World War II.
Survivors include one son, Donnie Hitaffer and his wife, Phyllis, of La Monte; one stepson, John Cartee and his wife, Sandy, of Kearney; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; an aunt, Ido Lewellen, of Slater; and an uncle, Byron Kitchen, of Slater.
He was preceded in death by two stepsons, Robert Cartee and Lloyd Cartee.
