He was born Feb. 4, 1947, in Marshall, the son of Mary Moore Hayslip and Lloyd E. Hayslip Jr. He attended Marshall schools and then was drafted into the army in 1966. He was awarded the National Defense Service, Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign and Good Conduct medals. He served his country honorably and was discharged in 1968. He and his wife, Helen, lived in the Kansas City area of Missouri and then in Cedar Rapids until 1989 when they made Martelle their home. He worked for Sears as a service technician from 1972 through 1984. He also taught refrigeration repair at Kirkwood Community College while employed at Sears. After moving to Martelle, he and his wife built the Martelle General Store and operated it until 1993. His passion was always remote control helicopters. He owned and operated The Heli Shop from 1980 to 1988. He also started a helicopter club and was the president from 1982 to 1988. He always worked hard and took care of his family. On March 18, 1995, he suffered a severe stroke and the family took care of him. They believe he didn't die at that time because Helen still needed him. Although we miss him, after Helen passed there was no need for him to suffer any longer and they are together again.
Surviving are his three children, Jennifer Knight and her husband, Joe, of Martelle, Michael Hayslip and his wife, Natalie, of Mechanicsville and William Hayslip of Martelle; one sister, LaVera Gann of Marshall; five brothers, James Hayslip of Old Town, Maine, Lloyd Hayslip Jr. and his wife, Judy, of Pensacola, Fla., Raymond Hayslip and his wife, Pat, of Wetumpka, Ala., Ron Hayslip and his wife, Patsy, of Windsor and John Hayslip and his wife, Sue, of Marshall; and two grandchildren, Kirra and Arianna.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Helen, on Nov. 2, 2007.
