NEW FRANKLIN -- It wasn't hard to see this coming.

The run-and-gun Sweet Springs basketball team did everything it could reasonably do to avoid embarrassing Prairie Home during their consolation semifinal contest Wednesday at the 80th New Franklin Tournament -- stopping its full-court press during the first quarter, pulling its starters early and limiting its three-point shots -- but still hit the century mark with a 100-13 romp.

The Greyhounds' 37 steals broke a state record -- set by Lathrop with 35 in 2000 -- nine by junior Anthon Smith, resulting in 81 field-goal attempts. They jumped out to a 31-4 first-quarter as junior Nick Peeples scored 16 of his 20 points.

The Panthers (0-9) had no player with more than four points.

Freshman Colby Dohrman came off the bench for a career-high 22 points and 15 rebounds and junior Kyle Hollrah had 14 points for Sweet Springs (5-5), which plays New Franklin in Friday's consolation final.

The Bulldogs (3-6) downed Slater, 29-24, as sophomore Travis Crowley had eight points, seven steals, four rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots.

The Wildcats (1-6) got four points each from senior Tyler Bishop and junior Jermie Pittman. The Purple will play for seventh place Friday against Prairie Home, the only opponent it has beaten this season.

Santa Fe 49, Wellington 43

HIGGINSVILLE -- Second-ranked Santa Fe was given its strongest push of the season Wednesday in its second pool game of the Lafayette County Tournament at Higginsville, but remained undefeated with a 49-43 decision over Wellington-Napoleon.

The Tigers trailed by only four points at halftime thanks to a combined 13 points from seniors Joey Mulheron and Cameron Seitz. The spread was only five points heading into the final frame, but senior Bryan Sander produced eight of his 16 points down the stretch for the Chiefs, who could have extended their lead further if not for missing the front end of two one-and-one opportunities at the free-throw line.

Mulheron scored 11 points and senior Brett Williams had 10 for Wellington (4-3).

Santa Fe was led by senior Taylor Wesley's 17 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. The Chiefs (10-0) will play Higginsville for the championship Saturday.

Girls

Sweet Springs 45, Prairie Home 29

NEW FRANKLIN -- The Sweet Springs girls got off to a slow start Wednesday, but recovered sufficiently for a 45-29 decision over Prairie Home in the consolation semifinals of the New Franklin Tournament.

The Lady Panthers took an early 9-7 first-quarter lead, but couldn't equal that scoring in any subsequent period. Meanwhile, the Lady Greyhounds tallied at least a dozen points in each of the last three frames -- including a 14-7 run to close the game, despite missing six of seven free throws during the fourth quarter.

Senior Ashley Baker's 10 points topped Prairie Home (1-8).

Junior Kristen Jones had a double-double with a career-high 21 points and 12 rebounds and freshman Brittany Higgins contributed eight points off the bench for Sweet Springs (5-5), while will play for the consolation trophy Friday against Pilot Grove.
