Sheriff warns of new scam targeting the elderly

Wednesday, January 7, 2009
In a late-morning press release Wednesday, Jan. 7, Saline County Sheriff Wally George alerted local residents to beware of yet another scam involving the theft of property from older citizens.

In the release, George said an elderly resident of Lafayette County had been robbed of more than $13,000 worth of property by two men posing as "electric company" workers.

The man was accosted by the two at his mailbox. While one of the men went to the basement with the older man to "check" his electrical box, the other ransacked the upper floors of the home.

The two suspects are white, and driving a white Ford truck with chrome wheels.

George asked anyone with information about the crime or the two suspects to contact his office at 660-886-5511, and to be "wary of allowing anyone into your home if you do not know who they are."
