'Hounds roll over LaMonte

Friday, December 19, 2008
LA MONTE -- A 22-1 second quarter splurge was more than enough for the Sweet Springs girls' basketball team to subdue LaMonte for a 51-12 non-conference road win Thursday.

The Lady Greyhounds' offense was slow in heating up, but the visitors' lead was already 11-4 when they went on their tear. Senior Stephanie Krause scored six of her game-high 15 points during the second-period spree.

Only two players scored for the Lady Vikings (1-5), eight points coming from sophomore Kendra Rieckhoff.

Sweet Springs shot only 26.4 percent from the field, but got balanced production -- with seven players tallying four or more points. The Lady Greyhounds were strong defensively, though, coming up with 27 steals -- six by Krause. Junior Hollie Heaper grabbed eight of the team's 43 rebounds.

The Sweet Springs boys got to empty the bench during their 82-51 victory at LaMonte.

Junior Nick Peeples' 10 first-quarter points helped the Greyhounds take a 21-14 lead, which only expanded as they racked up 25 points in each of the next two periods.

Junior Jacob Minor had 20 points for the Vikings (1-5).

Peeples finished with 21 points and nine rebounds and junior Zach Thomas had a double-double for Sweet Springs with 12 points and 14 boards.

The 'Hounds (4-3) also got a solid all-around game from junior Tyler Dohrman with 14 points, six steals and four assists.

Both Sweet Springs teams take on Pilot Grove today in the W-K/State Fair Community College Shoot-out at Sedalia.
