Emily F. DeGroodt, 96, of Lebanon, formerly of Slater, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at Christian Health Care-South in Lebanon.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Weiker Funeral Home in Slater, with Rev. Robert Sisney officiating. Bethany Weiker, organist, played "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Burial was in Slater City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Brad Burson, Randy Burson, Matt Burson, Thomas DeGroodt, Jeremy Wardenburg and Rob Newman. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society of Slater or Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry in care of the funeral home.
Born Jan. 5, 1912, in Gilliam, she was the daughter of the late Edgar E. and Rosa Lee Heinzler Ballowe. On July 19, 1943, in Slater, she married Thomas M. DeGroodt, who preceded her in death on Feb. 18, 1998. She retired from Audrain Medical Center in Mexico, where she worked for a number of years as a licensed practical nurse. She was a Baptist and had lived in Lebanon since 1995, moving from Slater.
She is survived by one son, Thomas O. DeGroodt of Jefferson City; one daughter, Linda Blackmore of Lebanon; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Hildegard Ballowe, Lucille Dye and Grace Anderson.
