Laura J. Sandwith, 79, of Slater, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Marshall, with Rev. Debbie Roath officiating. Organist Jane Kelly will play "How Great Thou Art," "Peace in the Valley" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Burial will be in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville. Pallbearers will be Joe Aull, Jim Gochenour, Virgil Rabe, Russell Whyte, Charles Guthrey and John Campbell. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
Born Jan. 2, 1929, near Turtle Lake, N.D., she was the daughter of the late George and Freda Frier Knippelberg. On Sept. 24, 1950, in Underwood, N.D., she married Jack W. Sandwith, who survives of the home. She was a member and deacon of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Marshall. She also belonged to the women's circle of the church. She was a member of Slater Garden Club and Slater Travel Club. She had been a den mother for the Cub Scouts and a Girl Scout leader. She worked at Slater Garment Factory for a number of years.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Michael Sandwith and his wife, Debbie, of Nashville, Tenn., Tom Sandwith and his wife, Gina, of Marshall and Rev. Terry Sandwith and his wife, Susan, of Frankfort; two daughters, Kathy Smith and her husband, Micheal, of Kansas City and Karen Gerhard and her husband, John, of rural Slater; 11 grandchildren, Pierce Sandwith, Denney Sandwith, Christopher Sandwith, Tyson Smith, Kyle Smith, Logan Smith, Matthew Smith, Kristin Sandwith, Lauren Sandwith, Amanda Fizer and her husband, Graham, and J.P. Gerhard; one great-granddaughter, Keeley Fizer; one brother, Darold Knippelberg of Minot, N.D.; and one sister, Luella Fortham of Bismarck, N.D.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and one half-brother.
