Leon Payne, 71, of Boonville, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2008, at Riverdell Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at St. Matthew A.M.E. Church, with burial in Salt Fork Cemetery in Nelson. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at H.T. May and Son Funeral Home in Boonville.
He was born Sept. 12, 1937, the son of Benjamin and Ruby Payne in Blytheville, Ark. He attended school in Blytheville. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was a camp counselor at Camp Hickory, a camp for children with diabetes. He was a member of Mar-Saline NAACP and a member of New Hannibal 20 Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the brotherhood.
He is survived by two sons, Vernon Payne of Boonville and Charles White of Kansas City; two daughters, Retta Fane of Marshall and Jennifer Rowles of St. Louis; nine siblings, Ruth McClinton, Linda Payne, Corene Wells and Regena Payne, all of Milwaukee, Wis., Shirley of Arlington, Texas, Ben Payne of Boonville, John Payne of Columbia, Terry Payne of Milwaukee and Sammy Lee Daniel of Tennessee; his stepmother, Blanche Payne of Milwaukee; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, George Payne and Luther Payne.
