Alma woman injured Friday morning in collision with tractor

Friday, October 31, 2008

A 74-year-old Alma woman was injured early Friday when her car struck a tractor on Highway 20 near the intersection with Elm Street in Blackburn, according to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Dorothy M. Dieckhoff was taken by Sweet Springs ambulance to I-70 Medical Center in Sweet Springs with moderate injuries, according to the report.

The accident occured about 7:15 a.m. when Dieckhoff's car struck a tractor driven by Roger Wyssman, 61, also of Alma. Her car traveled off the left side of the road and came to a rest.

She was not wearing a safety belt, according to troopers. No summons was issued, but the investigation continues, according to the report.

Even extremely careful drivers are sometimes involved in unintended contact with the cars of other extremely careful drivers. That's why these incidents are called "accidents." It's not fully daylight at 7:15 a.m. during Daylight Saving Time, for one thing, and for another, a tractor is usually moving a lot slower than any other vehicle on the road, which means it isn't outside the realm of possibility the driver of the car came upon the tractor around a curve, on the other side of a hill or some other obstruction, and even if not speeding, did not have time to come to a stop.

In any case, it doesn't seem really necessary to jump on the woman quite so hard.

I drive everywhere. this time of year i am extremely aware of farm equipment. I hope she is ok as well. She also was not wearing her seat belt. Any person with decent vission can see the farm equip with no prob, hill or not.

Its obvious that you, notgvnasht, do not drive around in the country during this time of year. Its not unusual to come over a hill, around a corner and meet up with a tractor or combine traveling from field to field. I hope Mrs. Dieckhoff is recovering well.
