Katherine Juanita Welch, 73, of Sweet Springs, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, at University Hospital and Clinics in Columbia.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008, at First Christian Church in Sweet Springs, with Rev. Jim West officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the church. Memorials may be made to Sweet Springs Food Pantry in care of Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home. Born Feb. 22, 1935, in Sweet Springs, she was the daughter of the late John Highbarger and Dora Gordon Highbarger. On March 8, 1952, she married Glen Welch, who preceded her in death on July 1, 1996. She had lived in Sweet Springs her entire life and graduated from Missouri Valley College in Marshall with a bachelor's degree and then earned a Master of Science degree in special education at Central Missouri University. She retired from Sweet Springs R-7 School District, where she was a special education teacher. She was eccentric and those who knew and loved her, enjoyed her wry sense of humor.
Survivors include one daughter, Stephanie Baker and her husband, Bill, of North Kansas City; one son, Michael Welch and his wife, Wanda, of rural Sweet Springs; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Carroll Highbarger and his wife, Betty, of Columbia; one sister, Ruth "Dookie" Grimes and her husband, Ray, of the state of California; two sisters-in-law, Connie Highbarger of Sweet Springs and Shirley Venable of Sweet Springs; along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald, Roger and Ronald.
