Signs of autumn: Walnuts everywhere
In the air and under foot, black walnuts are a familiar sign of autumn in the Saline County area, one of the first trees to begin shedding leaves and nuts. This tree on Redman Avenue in Marshall managed to lose most of its leaves before its nuts began to fall. But other trees litter lawns, streets and sidewalks with the bright green husks before their leaves tumble. Those who deal with black walnuts know that the husk is tough, but it quickly decays, turning yellowish and brown, then black, before crumbling from the shell. The shells, though, are tougher still, giving area bakers who treasure the nut meat inside a real workout.
