Dankenbring faces trial for alleged embezzlement from Malta Bend school

Monday, October 13, 2008

More than a year after she was arrested on suspicion of embezzling money from the Malta Bend School District, former district employee Carla J. Dankenbring, 34, of Waverly, will stand trial in Lafayette County Thursday, Oct. 16.

Dankenbring worked for Malta Bend schools from July 1, 2004, to June 30, 2006. Following her departure, an audit of the school's financial records was performed by the firm of Moore, Horton & Carlson CPA in preparation for the installation of a new accounting system.

The audit revealed 16 checks, totaling $38,518.54, had been written to credit card accounts belonging either to Dankenbring or a family member.

Investigators also found discrepancies in payroll checks written by Dankenbring as well as other instances of inconsistencies and unauthorized credits to Dankenbring. According to the probable cause statement, auditors suspected she had embezzled a total of $56,549.58 in school district funds.

Dankenbring was arrested March 28, 2007, and charged with the class B felony of theft/stealing, which carries the possibility of a five to 15-year prison sentence. She is currently free on a $15,000 bond.

I double checked. We haven't deleted any messages by you on this subject.

notbuying it obviously has a lot at stake here. From what I have been told, this goes back to a long-time secretary and her boyfriend-Supt. Supposedly, the school board selected an outside auditing firm to investigate all potential suspects, not just Carla. She was the only one with evidence against them, which makes sense, because she was the only who had control of the money. Administration and teachers can't make a check or pay a bill, it comes from the book keeper, which was Carla.

Nobody said she was innocent, just wait. You'll see what comes of this.

Accepted a plea deal, so much for being not guilty. She's because she isn't the only one, doesn't mean she's innocent.

According to the prosecuting attorney's office, Carla Dankenbring accepted a plea agreement this morning. Details I have are preliminary, but they involve a seven year prison sentence. She could be released after 120 days, however. The sentence also includes restitution. I believe the prosecutor's office will release more details in the morning.

AS A MATTER OF FACT, MTOWN RESIDENT I AM NOT RELATED TO DANKEBRING IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM. I WAS INVOLVED WITH MALTA BEND SCHOOL DURING THE TIME THAT DANKENBRING WAS EMPLOYED AND SHE WAS ALWAYS LOOKING OUT FOR WHAT WAS BEST FOR THE STUDENTS. SHE WAS PROBABLY THE ONE OF THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO DID. SO STOP ASSUMING AND DO YOUR RESEARCH =D

So I'm guessing notbuyingit has gone to the police with your first hand knowledge? When can we expect the authorities to make more arrests? Are you testifying for you friend? What's the SCOOP?

And the plot thickens!!!!

as an insider...i know and SAW with my own eyes that charge accounts and expentitures were grossly mis-used by higher administration, or the alledged accuser. it seems to me that the school is audited on a yearly basis and if there are such HUGE problems, they would have been surely caught by the accountant. THIS however, seemed to be a vindictive witch-hunt brought on by "higher administrtion" after being questioned as to how his credit card was being used in mexico, mo on a day that he was physically present at the school! if you look into it, you will find that this was a privately hired firm that was not familiar with the schools expenditures and policies that raised the allegations. why wasn't the regular cpa good enough to carry out the investigation? i feel that ms dankenbring was rail-roaded and if she faces charges...others should be in the spotlight also! i hope he also gets his spot in the public oppinion polls.

you spent too many years at the school helping yourself to the taxpayers money for you to go down alone.

you spent too many years at the school helping us out for you to go down alone.

______________

Probably a family member she helped out by paying their credit card bils.

I think there is more people involved then just this one person. She needs to come out with who else was involved. Why should she take all the heat when there was clearly more then on person ivolved. GO CARLA, TAKE EM ALL DOWN!! WE BELIEVE IN YOU..you spent too many years at the school helping us our for you to go down alone.

what she did was wrong... she did it... knowing it was wrong??? so she needs to pay for what she did!! i have 0 tolerance and no sympathy for anyone who is in a position such as she was, where she should have been an example for kids in the school system?? sure hope she dont have kids of her own for i hate to think what her kids are being taught!! sorry!! i feel people who do the crimes need to know they will be caught and do the time just as willingly as they did the crime!!

Seriously!!! what are you talking about not getting a fair trial?

-- Posted by positivemal on Tue, Oct 14, 2008, at 2:51 PM
Response by Eric Crump/Editor:
Nobody *here* said she wouldn't get a fair trial. Change of venue is requested by the a defendant when *they* think they won't get a fair trial. It's a fairly common move in serious cases.

Bet it is a change of venue. Happens a lot when folks think they won't get a fair trial in their own county.

Why is she standing trial in Lafayette County? The crime was done in Saline County. How many times is this trial being put off? Who is going to be the judge?

-- Posted by salinemg on Mon, Oct 13, 2008, at 11:03 PM
Response by Eric Crump/Editor:
As Muffin suggests above, Dankenbring applied for and received a change of venue. The judge in the case is Randall Shackelford.
