County commission to visit bridge, meet with public defender officials

Thursday, October 9, 2008

Saline County Commissioners plan to visit the bridge on Wildcat Road Thursday, they announced at their morning session.

It's estimated repairs to the bridge will require another 11 working days.

Commissioners met with representatives from the Missouri State Public Defenders Office Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Public Defender Kathleen Brown of the District 15 office in Sedalia and Kathleen Lear, comptroller of the Missouri State Public Defender's office in Jefferson City, discussed the possibility of making improvements in the existing Sedalia office or moving the office to another location.

According to Southern District Commissioner Richard "Dick" Hassler, MSPD pays the salaries of public defenders, but responsibility for the cost and maintenance of the building or office in which they work falls on the counties represented by each office.

Saline County is part of MSPD District 15, along with Pettis, Lafayette and Cooper counties.

Hassler said Wednesday's meeting was just a preliminary meeting, and that any decision about renovating or relocating the MSPD office will come after meetings with the other counties and additional discussion about alternatives.

The next regular meeting of the commission is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 14.
