County commission reports continued sales tax decline

Wednesday, October 8, 2008

At their regular meeting Wednesday, Oct. 8, Saline County Commissioners reported a continuing decline in sales tax and law enforcement tax collections.

Sales tax collections reported for October came to $89,039.88, ahead of last year's October totals, but the overall total of $848,737.63 for 2008 is down by about $30,000 from 2007.

Law enforcement tax collections are significantly down, too, at $66,907.64 for October, versus last year's October total of $84,253.20.

Northern District Commissioner Norvelle "Brownie" Brown said, "We appear to be making a little headway, but … probably won't catch up by the end of the year."

Commissioners issued a reminder that the courthouse will be closed Monday, Oct. 13, in honor of Columbus Day.

Well...with the economy in such great shape. [/sarcasm]

It is no wonder sales tax collection is down. Clearly if people don't have the money to spend there will be no taxes collected.

Catch up by the end of the year? Doubtful...unless of course the bail out plan includes giving the American people some money...
