Marshall man gets 25 years on drug charge

Monday, October 6, 2008

Judge Dennis A. Rolf sentenced Lawrence E. Stewart to 25 years in Missouri Department of Corrections in Division 4 court Monday, Oct. 6.

Stewart, 45, of Marshall, was convicted Aug. 13 for the class A felony of distribution of a controlled substance near public housing or other governmental assisted housing.

He was arrested and charged in September 2007 following the second of two drug buys made by a confidential informant that was observed by deputies of the Saline County Sheriff's Department.

According to the report by sheriff's deputies, Stewart was taken into custody after deputies obtained a search warrant for a residence in the 1300 block of South Grant following a "controlled drug buy." Deputies reported they discovered drug paraphernalia and a substance they believed to be cocaine in the residence.

In his remarks before sentencing, Rolf said this is the fifth felony charge on Stewart's record, and noted the defendant's continued "disrespectful attitude and irresponsible conduct," both while in custody and while on probation, pointing to drug tests indicating the use of both cocaine and marijuana during probation.

Rolf also noted Stewart had at no time accepted responsibility for his actions and indicated no remorse.

In a news release posted Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 7, Saline County Prosecuting Attorney Don Stouffer said it was "difficult to conceive of a person that contributes less to his community."

Stouffer also commended the jury for its work and Deputy Richard Miller for his testimony about how drug traffickers work in the area.

"Miller explained how officers rely upon citizen reports of drug activity in their neighborhood," Stouffer said, "and how several observations, together with surveillance and at times, actual sales of illegal narcotics, can culminate in undercover buys and subsequent search warrants of the dealer's premises."

He also credited former deputies Chris Chamberlin and Dusty Brandt for their roles in the investigation.

Excuse me, It is NOT public information. It is my understanding this is third felony charge for Mr. Arnold.

well, what do ya know?? On casenet now. But when you click on charges in 86 it is now public information. But they sure can leave public information for people who have passed away. Can't the people who have passed away at least rest in peace?? And the people manufacturing should be made public.

Eric come on.... I am not a snitch and that is not my job. That is what law enforcement is for. I could care less about what people want to do to their own bodies. I am just concerned with it being distributed to our children. I have lived here for 30 years and the person has been doing it all along. I know he went prison once for drugs but for some reason his CONVICTION is not on casenet. makes one think.....HHHMMMMMM

Truth hurts doesn't it??? I saw you removed my comments obviously a nerve was touched, same old lame Marshall Democrat news and local law enforcement. Proctecting snitches and allowing them to sell drugs and snitch on their competition. And YOU SNITCHES KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!

Response by Eric Crump/Editor:
Naming police informants in a public forum seemed like a potentially dangerous thing to do -- for them, for police officers and maybe for you. Plus, I have no way of knowing whether the people you name actually are or have been police informants. You could be right, or you could be naming names to get back at someone for something. Seemed to me the potential consequences outweighed the value of the making the information public.

buttercup, Yeah it was on the radio and in the papar and it is my understanding one should not be prosecuted if it is drug money.

buttercupp

You hit it right on the head!!!! And btw Kathy.....trust me their was one stolen in 05..... and he walks arounhd free as a bird supplying to our youth but he does work for the city at a lower price so.......go figure...

Response by Eric Crump/Editor:
Luckymomma,

Have you shared your information with law enforcement officials?

buttercup: There was a safe stolen in 2003. It was recovered and returned to its owners. Three young men were charged and convicted. That story is verifiably true. I don't find anything about a safe stolen in 2006 - could the earlier incident be what you remember?

-- Posted by Kathy Fairchild on Wed, Oct 8, 2008, at 10:44 AM

Sounds like R.A.

-- Posted by buttercupp on Wed, Oct 8, 2008, at 10:16 AM

yeah.....didn/t they get convicted even though it was drug money?????

-- Posted by luckymomma on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 8:21 PM

I remember that, those boys threw his safe off in salt fork creak and they got into trouble for it, that was on kmmo for like 2 or 3 days. Something does sounds really funny.

-- Posted by buttercupp on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 6:19 PM

well you know if this many people heard it....it muxt be true and noone on here is going to giv e information due to how dangerous he is. I heard there were glass pipies in the car and they are being analyzed as well. but i will bet my bottomed dollar nothing happens to him. He was busted once before but it is not on casenet..... sure does make you wonder why someone is protecting him??????

-- Posted by luckymomma on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 6:18 PM

I heard it was the drug dealer who got his safe stole from him back in March of 06

-- Posted by marshallmoresident on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 5:56 PM

pr,

I don't doubt it. And of course it's tough for law enforcement -- and the media -- to re-earn the trust lost in cases like that. Forever thereafter, there's going to be a certain number of people who see a conspiracy around every corner. Sometimes there is one, sometimes there's just smoke, no fire. I don't know which is the case this time.

Umm cleaning up the mean street's of Marshall, now if we can get a Federal/State grant to fund a narcotic's unit. Drug Dog would be nice but then again Marshall is still lagging behind in law enforcement equipment.

Hey Eric

Some years back some BIG WIGS from Marshall were "supposedly" caught up in a big bust in a county south of here. Problem is - after the initial report - no one in either county knew anything about it.

Funny how some information never leaves the arresting entity's office.

Just a thought re: the alleged bust last Sunday evening.

Response by Eric Crump/Editor:
If anyone has specific information -- a name, place or time -- feel free to email marshalleditor@socket.net so we can inquire further.

Hmmm, wonder who that might be, why isnt it being announced

Doesnt make much since

-- Posted by marshallmoresident on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 10:12 AM

I heard the same thing. I've also wondered why it hasnt been on the news or in the newspaper. buttercupp, your right about some people being plasted all over the radio and all over the newspaper and others arent. Makes a person wonder why this is.

-- Posted by buggiebuggie on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 10:07 AM
Response by Eric Crump/Editor:
Rumors are often based on fact -- but not always. Perhaps this one is not. If we hear differently, we'll publish what we find out.

Word has it that one of Marshall big drug dealers was arrested sunday evening. Havent heard anything on the news or seen anything in the newspaper about this. Why do some people get their names plastered all over the radio and in the newspaper and others dont?

-- Posted by buttercupp on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 9:58 AM
Response by Eric Crump/Editor:
We've asked local law enforcement officials and so far have not found anyone who is aware of this arrest. We generally only publish the names of people when formal charges have been filed.

i dont know about the three strikes law reall being upheld but I do know they look at your priors and they is taken into consideraion.

-- Posted by luckymomma on Mon, Oct 6, 2008, at 10:46 PM

I don't have a problem with him getting time in prison, but can someone explain to me why drug dealers get 25 years for selling to people willing to buy of their own free will and child rapist only gets 5 to 10????

-- Posted by volleyballmom on Mon, Oct 6, 2008, at 10:31 PM

amh: The maximum sentence in this trial was 30 years.

Reader101: Here is information on the so-called "three strikes rule." It may not apply in Missouri, but I'm checking that right now and will get back to you:

What happened to 3 strikes and your out. I thought after 3 felony convictions you were supposed to go away for life.

-- Posted by Reader101 on Mon, Oct 6, 2008, at 7:31 PM

Lucky for getting 25 yrs. coming from Rolf. He gave a drunk felon 120 DAYS for hitting a law enforcement officer on the interstate. Good job voters for getting him back in office this last go around!!!

-- Posted by onpoint on Mon, Oct 6, 2008, at 7:22 PM

5 FELONY'S AND ONLY 25 YEARS COME ON NOW!!! SHOULD OF BEEN GONE ALONG TIME AGO!!!
