Slater softball: Brunswick 2, Slater 1

Friday, October 3, 2008
BRUNSWICK -- The Slater softball team closed out a regular season which saw it make substantial gains with a disappointing 2-1 non-conference loss Thursday at Brunswick.

The Lady Wildcats committed only one error during the contest, but it was costly. After senior Krystal Wheeler led off the fourth inning with a double, a booted grounder allowed her to score. The stanza's second run came in on freshman Samantha Garvin's double.

Meanwhile, Brunswick (7-8) was getting strong pitching from Wheeler, who didn't allow a hit until sophomore Ana Jackson singled with one out in the fifth. She was forced out at second base on the next play, but freshman Kayla Holt and junior Lexsi Griffith followed with base hits to plate the Purple's lone run.

Freshmen Danielle Allen and Jacqueline Anderson had the only other hits for Slater (6-10), which meets Madison in the first round of the Class 1, District 11 Tournament Wednesday at Sturgeon.
