Klinge resigns from Marshall school board

Thursday, October 2, 2008 ~ Updated 1:09 PM

Citing interest in shifting the scope of her advocacy for the students of the Marshall school district and a number of work and other interests that are complicating her ability to serve, Marshall Board of Education member Jeanette Klinge submitted her resignation effective Friday, Sept. 26, according to a letter released by the board Thursday, Oct. 2.

The board met in special session Thursday evening to accept Klinge's resignation and to decide how to proceed in filling the rest of her term.

Board President Anita Wright read excerpts from Klinge's letter, including:

"There are several reasons for this. I am trying to do three jobs. The embroidery and imprint, the insurance, and at the convenience store and I am staying very busy.

"I want to advocate for our kids from a distance. I have a much broader view from the outside looking in than from the inside looking out," Klinge's letter said.

She also noted that being on the school board limits her ability to do business with the district because she adheres to conflict of interest policies.

In the letter, she also noted her passion for the Week in Pink cancer fundraising effort, which she has been heavily involved in this year and hopes will grow in the future to a statewide event.

Wright said Klinge has served the district well over the 8 1/2 years she's been on the board and noted that she would be difficult to replace.

"I think she did a mighty fine job," Wright said. "She's going to be missed."

Klinge served on the board through some difficult times, most recently the termination in January of former superindent Rob Gordon and the termination in July of three elementary school teachers accused of breaching standardized test security protocols.

She indicated she thinks the new superintendent is "the right man" and that she now wants "to stand back and view the growth" of the district.

Klinge was the most outspoken member of the board in recent years, and in her letter she said she hoped her service had contributed to the district.

"Some people are like Lou Pinella and they kick the dirt up now and then," she said. "I hope the dirt I kicked up will light the much-needed fire and results will be forthcoming."

The board will advertise for someone to complete the final six months of her three-year term, inviting application letters from anyone who is a resident taxpayer of the district, has resided in the state for one year preceding their appointment and is at least 24 years old.

Letters can be sent to board Secretary Linda Perkins at 860 W. Vest St., Marshall, Mo., 65340.

The deadline is 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16.

The board agreed to hold a special open session at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 to review applications and discuss making an appointment.

Wright emphasized that if the person appointed wishes to continue on the board after Klinge's term expires they will have to file for the April election.

Superintendent Craig Noah said the appointee would not be required to take Missouri School Board Association training course because new board members are given a year to do so, and the appointee will serve only six months.

He said if the appointee chooses not to attend training session, the district might be able to provide informal MSBA or in-house orientation.

Board member Kathy Green noted that the current situation is different from that of board member Larry Godsey, who has been deployed overseas with his military unit since late last year.

"People have asked me about Larry," she said. "He is active duty and he didn't want to resign. That's why he hasn't been replaced. He's serving his country."

And he is expected to return before his term expires and continue to serve on the board.

17mizzou17,

I knjow exactly what you are talking about. And she has always been that way. I went there a few years before that but honestly I will never forget her because she was sooo mean and her favorite tool of punishment was corporal. And it went to far more than once.

Why do you have to be 24????

Let's get some youth on that board.

What happened to my last comment? It was not offensive in any way. It was the truth, dont believe me, ask any MALE that went to Malta Bend High School from 77 to 81. KEEP KLINGE away from the boot jack!!!! If she did that today she'd be in jail

All I remember is her being very mean as a p.e. teacher. I can recall one day we were all sitting on the bleachers and we were talking as 4th graders do and her pulling out paddle and telling us to shut up or we were all gonna get it. there certainly was no heart in that.

I agree with won. We need this change and she was very pushy and needed to go. Why she kept getting elected was a shock to me. I hope we get some new blood who will not just be a go along with the peers but stand up for what is right! I think it helps to have kids in school so your in touch with whats going on.

The article on J. Klinge is just ridiculous. From what I hear she boasted openly that she was going to get someone fired (like she had others fired) and hire a relative in his place. Her "stepping down" is not because she wants to, but from what I hear, because she was in trouble with the Missouri School Boards Association for acting in an unethical manner as a board member. She has finally been called on the carpet for what she has been so good at for years...bullying others to get her own way. Klinge appeared to operate under the "good ole' boy" system and tried to make sure her friends and relatives within the distict were taken care of. Maybe she finally was covered in the "dirt" she stirred up on everyone else. I think this is the best news the Marshall School District has had in a long time.

Gal66: There has been no movement on the teachers' civil appeal, at least none that shows up on case.net. The appeal was filed in late August, and as of today, that's all the information we have.

Did the judge ever make his statement about the 3 teachers?

why worry about rumors now.... Not like they worried too much about rumors before. It was all fun and games when some of the board was dragging innocent peoples lives through the mud, talking about things that were not true about them out in public!!!!

The school seems to be running just fine as far as I know. This is how rumors get started.

Lots of junk going on with the school system....

Heart Maybe, But her mouth not so much.

Jeanette will be missed. Her heart was always in the right place. Good Luck Jeanette!

This is a bogus story! Everyone in town knows the

REAL reason and it has nothing to do with her "work and other interests" and everything to do with her inability of knowing what the limitations of being an individual member of a board are. It's not a new problem as she has amazingly and absolutely bullied the entire group ever since Jeff Stubblefield left the school board.

-- Posted by cssmcc on Fri, Oct 3, 2008, at 11:08 AM

So.... what is the real reason she resigned???
