Velma (Edwards) Proctor, 86, passed away Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, at Apple Ridge Care Center, where she had been a resident since November 2004.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at Grand Pass Methodist Church. Burial will be in Grand Pass Community Cemetery, Grand Pass. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at Gibson Funeral Home, Waverly. The family suggests contributions be made to Alzheimer's Association in memory of Mrs. Proctor. She was born Jan. 18, 1922, in Saline County, the daughter of James "Bum" and Harriet (Spotts) Edwards. She attended Edwards School, located on land in the Grand Pass bottoms, donated by her grandfather, R.B. Edwards. Later, she attended Grand Pass High School, where she graduated in 1939. On Aug. 5, 1939, she was married to Clarence Proctor; he preceded her in death on March 14, 1986. To this union were born two children, Linda Marie Eldridge and C.J. Proctor. She was active in United Methodist Church activities, where she was a member. She was an active member of American Legion Auxiliary from the inception of the Waverly Unit in the early 1950s. She was a cook at Santa Fe High School in Grand Pass for two years. She worked for veterinarian Port Callaway, then Calloway and Clark, and Callaway and Pemberton until Pemberton moved to Blackburn. She worked for Pemberton for 20 years. She also had provided childcare.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Eldridge of Nevada; five grandsons, Robert Kalthoff, Jodie Eldridge, Jimmy, Michael and Timothy Proctor; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; cousins; and a host of friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, C. J. Proctor, who passed away in March 1986; one granddaughter, Tami Kalthoff; an infant sister, Margie; and one brother, James Edwards Jr.
