Roddie L. Hockaday, 54, of Slater, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at his home.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul Freewill Baptist Church in Slater. Rev. Noah Poole will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery in Slater. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Weiker Funeral Home in Slater. Memorials are suggested to a trust fund for his grandchildren.
Born June 14, 1954, in Slater, he was the son of the late Herman A. Hockaday Sr. and Virginia May Falls Hockaday Ellis. He was a member of St. Paul Freewill Baptist Church in Slater. He served on the usher board and the usher board choir and was a founding member of the Heaven Sent Choir. He worked as a youth worker at Butterfield Youth Services in Marshall. He was a graduate of Slater High School and attended culinary school.
He is survived by four children, Clifton Lewis, Taressa Hope Hockaday, Marcus Linn Hockaday and LaChelle Linn Hockaday; seven brothers, Herman A. Hockaday Jr. of Ferguson, C.W. Hockaday of Slater, Gary Hockaday of Slater, Stevie Hockaday of Marshall, Timmie Hockaday of Marshall, Kenny Hockaday of Slater and Henry Ellis of Fitchburg, Wis.; one sister, Sheila Moore of Slater; six grandchildren and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Diane Hockaday and Laverne Mirtzine.
