WINDSOR --- Down by a point late in the fourth quarter Friday, the Sweet Springs football team marched 67 yards to the Windsor 2-yard line.

On first down, the Greyhounds handed off to senior Tyler Rennison. He ran to the opening, but before he could get to the goal line for a go-ahead touchdown, a helmet knocked the ball from his grip. Sophomore Ryan Hamilton scooped it up and rumbled 98 yards to secure Windsor's 21-12 I-70 Conference home victory.

"We thought we had it won," remarked 'Hounds head coach Tim Smith. "We did a fairly good job on defense and we probably could have won it if we held onto the ball there."

Rennison had scored the game's first touchdown on a 4-yard run 15 seconds into the second period.

Windsor answered with a 4-yard run by junior Matt Madole to go into the break with a 7-6 lead.

Junior Billy Martin's 3-yard TD run was countered by a 22-yard pass from senior Brett Shoop to senior Cory Buford.

Shoop passed for 118 yards to lead Windsor (1-1, 1-1 I-70). The 'Hounds rushed for 203 yards, half of them split between senior Blake Vogelsmeier and junior Tyler Dohrman.

Sweet Springs (0-2, 0-2) will host St. Paul for its home opener Friday.

University Academy 43, Santa Fe 6

ALMA -- Junior Darrenn White passed for 222 yards and two touchdowns Friday as University Academy of Kansas City rolled to an easy 43-6 non-conference victory at Santa Fe.

White hooked up with junior Josh Wilson on a 62-yard bomb shortly after the game began, then senior Ricky Thompson scored on runs of 13 and 2 yards before the Chiefs got on the board with a 19-yard toss from sophomore Ross Tieman to senior Darin Buford to cap a wild 19-6 first quarter.

Senior Syreal Sims ran for 141 yards, scoring from 2 and 8 yards out, and caught a 47-yard pass from White as the Gryphons tallied four unanswered touchdowns during the second and third periods. Wilson finished the scoring with a 3-yard run.

University Academy (2-0) accumulated 328 rushing yards during the game and enjoyed a 5-1 turnover advantage.

Senior Bobby Wood had 23 tackles for Santa Fe (0-2), which plays Saturday at Wentworth Military Academy.

Paris 33, Slater 8

PARIS -- The tandem of juniors Taylor Barr and Jon Gilliam combined for three touchdowns Friday during defending Lewis and Clark Conference champion Paris' 33-8 win over visiting Slater.

After senior Brent Dye bulled in from 2 yards out, Barr found Gilliam with a 54-yard bomb for a 13-0 first-quarter lead.

The Wildcats cut the deficit to five points with 6:24 remaining in the first half when junior Chris Scott went 38 yards with a pass from junior Cody Skinner and sophomore Zach Sullivan caught a two-point conversion toss.

However, the Coyotes tacked on six more points before halftime when Gilliam secured an 8-yard flip in the end zone and added to their lead with Gilliam's 35-yard TD catch early in the fourth quarter. Dye later ran 24 yards for a late score.

Barr completed 14 of 24 passes for 197 yards and Dye ran for 100 yards to pace Paris (1-1, 1-0 L&C).

Senior Jeremy Fizer accounted for 50 of Slater's 62 rushing yards. The 'Cats (1-1, 0-1) will be at home for the first time Friday to entertain Knox County.
