Karen L. Avery, 63, of Slater, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at her home.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, with Rev. Robert Sisney officiating. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Weiker Funeral Home in Slater. Memorials are suggested to Fitzgibbon-Mary Montgomery Hospice or Slater High School Scholarship for Dual Credit Classes.

Born Aug. 13, 1945, in Marshall, the daughter of the late Bert W. and Virginia Shepard North. On Feb. 18, 1967, in Slater, she married Larry E. Avery, who preceded her in death on April 19, 2007. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Slater. She worked for 29 years as a cook in the cafeteria at Slater Public Schools. She was a 1963 graduate of Slater High School.

She is survived by one son, Gene Avery and his wife, Toni, of Moberly; one daughter, Ginger Newman and her husband, Brent, of Slater; one grandson, Benjamin Newman of Slater; one brother, Wesley North of Higginsville; and one sister, Kathy McGary of Glasgow.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Charles North.
