Alfred G. Simmons, 92, of Hermitage, formerly of Grand Pass, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, at Hermitage Christian Health Care in Hermitage.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall with Doug Gilpin, pastor, officiating. Visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home. Burial with military rites will be in Mt. Nebo Cemetery in Grand Pass. Born Jan. 4, 1916, in Malta Bend, he was the son of the late Earl Simmons and Laura Bell Pollard Simmons. On Dec. 25, 1937, he married Maurine Gorman, who preceded him in death on May 24, 2005. He had lived in southern Missouri the last few years, but lived in the Grand Pass area for 66 years. He was a graduate of Grand Pass High School and was a carpenter and cabinet-maker in the Saline and Lafayette county areas for many years. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II. He was a member of Grand Pass Christian Church, Galmey VFW Post 9638 and Malta Bend American Legion Post 558.
Survivors include one son, Gerald Simmons and his wife, Linda, of Lake Pomme de Terre; three grandchildren, Heather Mitchell, Jeff Simmons and Kimberly Simmons; and four great-grandchildren, Ninita Chirino, Chelsea Mitchell, Kaitlyn Mitchell and Joseph Michael Simmons.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Gary Simmons; one brother, Earl Simmons; and four sisters, Gladys, Geraldine, Audrey and Fern.
