Girl Scout registration to be held Aug. 26 in Marshall
Marshall area Girl Scout troops will hold registration for the 2008-2009 year Tuesday, Aug. 26.
Parents will have an opportunity to register their daughters who are in kindergarten through high school.
Registration will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 710 E. Yerby.
Registration fees are $10 and should be paid at the time of registration. Financial assistance may be available for families who request it.
This year Girl Scouts have reconfigured the levels for girls. Kindergarten and first-grade girls are Daisies. Second- and third-graders are Brownies, and fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders are Juniors. Girls in grades seven and eight are Cadette Scouts, and girls in grades nine and 10 are Senior Scouts.
Girls who are juniors and seniors in high school are classified as Ambassadors, a new level of scouting.
Girls are welcome to join at any level.
Troops meet at a variety of times during the week. Every effort is made to match girls with a troop that meets at a time that meshes with their schedule.
"Girls who join scouts have a chance to make new friends and the opportunity to try new experiences such as camping in a safe environment," said Karla Wyett, a Junior scout leader who serves as troop coordinator in Marshall. "The scout year is full of activities, including crafts, games, participation in council-wide events and overnighters at Girl Scout cabins."
Adults also are welcome to volunteer to assist troops or to serve as leaders. Training sessions and mentors are available for those interested in helping with a troop.
